...By a State Police officer. On a stretch of Rt 4 (Hwy) that runs through East Greenwich. I came up over the hill and could see about a 3/4 of a mile down the Hwy that there was someone on a bike cruising down the shoulder. The cruiser was about fifty yards ahead of me and flipped his lights on as the cyclist was going up the off-ramp of the exit I was going to take. The guy is looking back at the cruiser with a "what did I do" expression as I drove past.

I don't know if the guy was not from around here but there is no need to be on the Hwy with all the roads around the area. And people routinely travel in excess of 75 - 80mph down this stretch. Hey, I'm a cyclist too but I have to call "Bone head" move here. Not a smart move at all.

I wonder what he was pulled over for?

My only choice if I want to ride outside of the base it to take a 70mph road to back roads where 65mph is the speed limit but people drive closer to 80mph. I always feel like I'm looking over my shoulder and cycling up here feels more like chore than a means to relax and get some exercise.

I understand there are areas that there is no other option. Around here there are ample options to circumvent the Hwys. I think (I say think) that bikes are not allowed on that stretch...which could be why he was pulled over.

About 25 yrs ago I had a state trooper pull me over at 8am on a weekend in the middle of nowhere as I got off the hwy to turn around and head home.

At the top of the off ramp I didn't come to a complete stop at the stop sigh!!!

I rolled thru at like 5kph, shame. That was a $60 ticket IIRC. Joke. When he walked up to me I told him, "I can't believe you pulled me over on a trivial stop sign". I was 21 or so.

He didn't like that. He said, "TRIVIAL? TRIVIAL?". That was all she wrote. By then I decided a lycra kit in the pokey wasn't a good idea so I shut up.

btw. this section of hwy was legal...

I think Route is like our expressways around here: Limited access hiways and bicycle ,pedestrian and horses prohibited. A friend of mine saw a cyclist peddaling down Route off ramp and pulled him over and noticed a 12 Guage shotgun mounted on the toptube. Needless to say he was cited for the violation and arrested for firearms violation. WWhen I'm on patrol I don't pull cyclists over but usually give them an escort and laneblock if on a narrow high traffic road or one without a shoulder marking.

In Maryland, it is illegal for bicycles to ride on roads where the speed limit is above 55.

Big Willy, could that be it? The guy was going on to a road with too high a speed limit?

That is so cool!!!

I think Illinois had minimum speed limits on high ways to prevent any unwanted traffic. It was usually 45mph. I'm not sure what North Dakota has or if it even mandated a 2 foot passing distance.

That very well could be. I'll have to look into it.

Driving the car to avoid congested/dangerous areas until you get to safer roads is always an option unless you tell me you don't have a car.

Very true and a smart option. In this case there are rural roads all around here.
