View Full Version : Who needs a Big Leg Emma

I was discussing frame choices with a friend the other day. Hes newish to cycling and currently gets around on a nasty aluminium thing that he pulls apart every time he puts the hammer down. This guy is 6' 2" and 100kgs of muscle. Mostly in his legs. He is truely powerful. He is also a very graceful rider.
We were discussing steel frames and I was thinking MAX tubing or marcelo or BLE. I doubt he'd go the coin on the pegorettis but was wondering what sort of rider really needs or gets the most out of a BLE as opposed to a MAX or marcello type build.

A graceful rider 100kg would look even more graceful on a BLE

Dave Kirk can explain why the big chainstays make the difference for a big strong rider. I'm a big dude and recently got myself a MX Leader. The fat stays help the whole frame feel a lot more planted in the back when you really put some power to the pedals. The difference is subtle, but noticeable.

Perhaps Emma?

I'm a little bigger than 100kg and I have two bikes currently built up. In the posted picture, the BLE is in front with the new custom behind it. The custom is an Argonaut built with Max chainstays and fork blades, a 38mm downtube, and a mix of Columbus everywhere else. The rides are very similar with the Argonaut being a little more springy but still responsive. I have a MX Leader frameset waiting for a future build.

Bottom line, you can spend $4k plus and wait for a BLE or you can have a custom builder make you a bike that rides very similar for half the price.

Had a custom 953 frame built for my 95 kilos. No noticeable flex at 1600+ watts. Basically I think any quality custom builder can build a bike to fit the needs of big guys but perhaps not as cool a paint job ;)

I'd focus on the wheels as well as the frame. Wheel flex can render a stiff frame nearly useless. BLE's are very cool however.

What does "pulls apart" mean?.....Nothing at all wrong with wanting a new bike but big tube AL is tailor made for big powerful riders. Caad 8,9,10, Love 3, Ridley Sc....I don't think any of these are going to "pull apart" under your friend. Again if he wants steel or carbon or bamboo fine, but there's nothing at all wrong with AL!

i believe the first emma was built for eric zabel (least that's what i heard, please add grain of salt), with eric's power leading dario to create the internal buttressing system. maybe that's who 'needs' an emma? ;) but seen another way, who needs an emma is whoever wants an emma.

You know, I think his legs would have more impact without his shorts around his ankles.

The internal plates were developed for track bikes a few decades ago. Dario just made them look cooler.

I consider myself a big, powerful rider and my Peg Duende works just fine for me in spite of the less-stout chain stays. I don't detect a bit of flex. Jeff N.

You guys (and gals) keep on talking. I am trying to regain my self esteem/self worth after reading rustychain's comment about "no noticeable flex at 1600+ watts". Maybe I should just take up checkers or chess.....:)

Spooky timing.
The original guy I was refering to in the first post mashed his chainring because of frame flex powering up a short sharp hill a week ago. Was talking frames again with him the other day.

LOL, on topic and at 195lbs, I like stiff handlebars, too. Give me lotsa spokes, strong steel and boxer shorts.
