I'm helping my sister-in-law research an article and I can use your help. How many of you know who is currently the highest ranked rider on the world tour. I don't actually need his name (I can use the Internet too :) ). I just need to know if you are aware of who he is the way that a tennis fan knows that Raphael Nadal is the number one player.

All I need is a simple yes, no or "I didn't even know there were rankings.

Thanks.

A simple yes. A ranking is only a ranking if Eddy is #1 on said ranking.

y'know, I probably did know there were rankings in cycling...but no, I have no idea who #1 is.

I'm not sure I knew Nadal is the #1 player in tennis, but then again I'm not a tennis fan.

I definitely don't know whether or not there are rankings in the sports that I do consider myself a fan of. Who's the #1 ranked basketball player in the NBA? No freakin' idea. [edit: well, I suppose up until a month ago it might've been Lebron James...maybe?]

Who's ranking these folks anyway?

NO, but I think it's done on points? We also don't have the access to the exposure to Euro cycling in the US that people close to the action do (albeit no excuses).

I do recall occasionally seeing stories in VeloNews with headlines like "___ moves up in rankings," but I can't retain such trivia.
Same with team rankings: Garmin's on top one week, HTC was on top (and howcome they can't get a new sponsor?), somehow, this ain't like baseball, where statistics really mean something.

My guess was right but I would have said no to the quiz. My knowledge of that answer is only as good as my chance memory of seeing something in the cycling press and having it stick with me for a little while.

I think it's more meaningful in tennis because the number one player is probably the number one seed and pretty likely to win on other than the wrong court surface most years, whereas in cycling the number one is quite likely not to even be trying to win in most races, somewhat unlikely in some when he does try, and the winner of the Tour is likely to be viewed as #1 by casual fans regardless of who picks off places at the smaller races. I mean, really, look at the number 3 on that list.
