Yeah, there are no upgrades from Dura Ace skewers.

Same thing with Record (especially the older, silver ones).

I don't put anything else on my bikes*.

* the 'cross bike is 135mm so I use XTR. You get the idea.

If you're determined to upgrade, Bold Precision is great. $120 shipped. They don't clamp as strongly as Campy or Shimano skewers, but they're more than adequate.

Check out skewers from HOPE components. Made in England, and available in a variety of colors, they are without doubt the highest quality skewers I've ever seen, and pretty much readily available now. Check around. Also, their bar end plugs, seatpost collars and headsets are of the highest quality as well. VERY impressive. Jeff N.

That is a nice bike. I looked and looked, and I don't see anything to upgrade! Someone said a wireless computer -- that would get rid of that wire wrapped around the brake cable. . .

Plenty of cosmetic tweaks available. Most that come to mind involve red highlights:

Black bar tape w/ red highlights.

Red cable housing (might be a bit too much)

Black tires with a thin red stripe

Red steerer tube spacer (not all of them, just a few)

Red pedals

Black crank with red chainring

The list goes on and on...

+1..I use the Red KCNC Ti skewers, no complaints and I believe got the best review on the fairwheel forum.

What I usually do to curb that frequent "urge", is change the bottle cages. Or the tires. Or both. Two PRO3's (or your tire preference) in red and two red bottle cages, and it'll look like a different bike, IMO. And cost, maybe $100.

I got a pair of these if you like. They grip like a Koala to a gum tree in a hurricane. Gunmetal colour will go beautifully with your frame without being too gaudy ;)

Available from Fairwheel. Similar clamping design to KCNC, but a more minimalist, less chunky lever design.

They've my wheels in place with no problems for a couple of years.

Skewers are old fashioned, wing nuts are the new new thing.
VO wing nuts shown, GB Ben-Hur wing nuts are even cooler.

I just picked up a set of these Speedcific bolt-on skewers, don't need them but liked the weight and price. http://cgi.ebay.com/Bolt-on-Skewers-Black-MTB-Road-67grams-/270771217439?pt=Cycling_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3f0b38e41f#ht_2720wt_1141

Off topic, but this is apparently where Mike Garcia of OddsandEndos went. I have a set of his wheels with Speedcific hubs.

so I'm not trying to start a war, but...

what makes a Dura Ace or Record or ??? better than any other skewer? for reference I have a pair Salsa Ti skewers on the Campy wheels, Salsa steel on my mtn bike, Mavic on the cross bike, and Ultegra on the Steelman... I can't tell a difference in any of them and they've all been in rotation for a few years now... I guess what I'm saying is I've never lost a wheel on the trails, road or in a cross race so they are all performing as advertised... the only difference I can see is weight and looks...

what am I missing?

Do some red accents with quality parts. I have been considering this with my naked titanium bike with red decals. Already have red cables, bar tape, and saddle maybe, still trying to decide if I like the Prologo Scratch Pro in 134 red. I have a 143 to demo but red is not available for that size in US so not sure if I can get it and may have to go with black if I like the wider saddle.

There's more leverage and a presumption of better security with the enclosed cam type skewer.

Per Sheldon "The result is that the exposed cam type provides very much less clamping force for a given amount of hand force on the lever."

Keep your ride aesthetically simple. Anodized parts in colors other then black or silver are for BMX bikes, not road bikes. I just picked up a pair of C-4 skewers and really like them...very simple, effective design, very fair price and only 55 gms.

I guess I'll have to take your word for it. I mean, I've seen a Koala at the zoo, and it appeared that he had a pretty good grip. But it was a Eucalyptus tree. Are those easier to hold onto than a gum tree? :)

These have been rock solid for me. Weightweenies might object, but are skewers the place you'd like to compromise and test your health insurance?

How about a fork upgrade? A bit more spendy, but you'll notice it more. You can usually get a used ouzo pro for about 80-100 bucks... Or if you want to go for something with red accents, hunt around for an alpha q...which I have NIB...

I am curious, how many lightweight skewers you have heard of failing...and with a decent locking design, how do you propose they're going to fail. I have used them for quite awhile. Seems a little over the top to me. Let's just say, I am not counting the days or losing any sleep.

how many properly closed skewers have you heard of failing period? that was my point in my last post... except for weight and looks, I think modern skewers are all pretty much the same...

decided to follow some advice here and switch up some minor things.

changed bottle cages, swapped tires with a "display bike" i've got, cleaned the drivetrain, new grease everywhere. Feels brand new. And when it feels old again I've got some bar tape and a new saddle in mind.

Thx for the suggestions!

To the OP I have a pair of TI black salsa flip offs you can have for the cost of shipping if you are interested. I don't like the plastic cam bushing so I am using the skewers that were included with my zondas. Let me know if you want them.
