"Stupid" question. I just bought a 2003 Serotta Fierte. It has a litlle nipple on the right seatstay, facing inward toward the wheel. It's about 1/2 way down. What is it??

Chain hanger would be my guess.

I guess they help with quick wheel changes but I have never used one.

I appreciate that feature in a frame. If you ever stick your bike in your car trunk with wheels off....it keeps the chain tight so it doesn't fall off. You can do the same with a short bungee cord, but the chain hanger tab is a nice touch. I believe the frame builder just takes a big headed nail, cuts in to correct length, then welds it into seat stay.

the funny thing is I have/had several bikes with chain hangers but I never used them and I never saw anyone else use them either. Nobody ever showed me what they could do for me. I'll try one next time I pack my big bikes in my MINI car.
