View Full Version : Ride Photo Challenge

MattTuck

I'll propose this little challenge, over the next week (7 days), take a picture that tells the forum something about your riding. I know many folks on here ride in very diverse parts of the country/world, and it would be great if we get a cross section of the types of riding that people are doing this week -- everything from some of the epic rides folks do, to your commute.

Limit, 1 photo per member. Has to be a ride over the next 7 days, so don't go pulling out pics from that epic ride you did last summer. You don't need to go for most impressive, just share a bit the actual riding you do.

Is this a challenge or a contest? A contest would have a Serotta frame as a prize.

Nice idea Matt. Too bad you didn't post this yesterday as I would have had a shot of me on the side of a glass strewn road with sweat dripping off my nose and oil all over my hands from changing the rear flat with those backward dropouts on my trusty Klein. Would have been a great shot though.

As for riding over the next seven days we'll see about that. Now that I'm not a professional amateur bike racer I'm a fair weather rider.

Here's one from my ride today, I'll put the rest in your thread from yesterday if anyone wants to look. Pretty typical for me, riding a bike I have no business owning down a deserted road with crops on each side.

Despite some riding in rural New Hampshire, the bulk of my riding this year has been on the Minute Man bike path outside of Boston. Here's a shot from my ride today that I thought was appropriate. This is from the Lexington Battle Green, for those familiar with American history.

Did a nice ride in coastal North San Diego County today. I generally follow this route or something similar each weekend...

Picture 1: Starting out North on Highway 101. It's a beautiful day.

Picture 2: Always good to stop and check out the surf at Swami's. Looks about 2-3' today, but to many Freds in the water.

Picture 3: Heading inland away from the coast now -- Time for some hill climbing!

Picture 4: Why did I think this was such a good idea?

Picture 5: I guess the view makes it worth it. . .

Picture 6: Time for a beer or three. . .

My family and I did a night tour of our Nation's Capitol last night. It's something I look forward to every week. We start at the Botanical Gardens and cross over the Potomac River to Arlington National Cemetery and back...good times with our 6 and 7 year olds.

Obligatory shot with the Washington Monument on the background.

All four couples who post on our local blog
www.cyclingthelakes.blogspot.com
Gathered for a Big Spirit lake lap.
My wife and I (SV/CSI)started out at our cabin on big spirit.
We stopped to pick up Clydesdale and his wife (IF/legend ti) for
Homemade scones. We picked up another couple (lemond/legend ti)
And headed to see bojibiker and his wife (trek/fierte ti)
For sunshine rolls, fruit and an accordion music send off!
We had a ball riding around the lake together--from paceline riding
To a couple of interval sprints, to just chatting with best friends!
BEST LAKE LAP EVER
We stopped at the pumphouse at the end of the loop for a view
Of the lake...the bikes slip in behind the park bench
Like it was designed for that purpose and our wives
Took their places...we then had an incredible lunch at
www.rababsbistro.com
To cap off the perfect ride!

Ever have one of those days when everything is great and then it all goes wrong? Today was a day like that.

It started fantastic with a typical dirt road adventure from my house and I planned on 40-45 miles today. On the way back up a long nasty hill, 'hiss'...

I flatted. I was riding on my cyclocross tires and never flat so I left all the tools at home. To make matters worse, I forgot my cell!!! I walk, and walk, for at least 3 miles in cleats.

Cars and trucks pass me, even a cyclist. Shame on that biker.

Finally, a fellow bicyclst came up behind me and asked if I needed anything and hooked me up with a tube and co2. BUT!!! In my hurry to get the tube installed I neglected to run my fingers on the inside of the tire. I didn't see anything on the outside but dumb me.

So, I ride up the hill and coming down I flat again. I walk, and walk, for at least 2 miles.

Finally, a man named Dan in a truck asked if I was ok and gave me a lift home. Bless him and Happy Fathers day to him.

Yep had a few of those days when ive gotten a flat in the middle of nowhere without tools. Unfortunetly I never seem to be in such magnificent surroundings as you were today! That dirt road looks exactly like the kind of riding i want to do but cant be found around here. Looks amazing.

Glad you got a lift back!

Wow does indeed sound like a horrible day, with lots of walking.

However, the scenery you have is totally gorgeous. I'm guessing Colorado? New Mexico?

Thanks for posting.

So I had the winner today but

riding in marine layer fog means 3' visibility and no legit pictures.

but its pretty freakin awesome to come up the sunny side of a mountain and then get enveloped as you turn the corner toward the ocean.

it is even more awesome to descent in that stuff while listening to the band Caspian as loud as you can. Decreasing radius turns at -15% YES PLEASE!

I need to get a helmet cam

You are correct sir. I live down in Castle Rock and this is a hidden gem of a road just West of me. I can turn it into a metric loop out to Decker's as well which is a very hard ride with lots of climbing.

Trying to play by the rules..."Limit, 1 photo per member. Has to be a ride over the next 7 days"

This is not my typical ride at the moment but soon will be. :)

Visiting Melbourne, Australia for a couple of weeks for "business", met up with forumite "thinpin" to ride around the Mornington Peninsular area on Saturday, as my Irish pal would say, "what a nice bloke!" and he is exceedingly generous to let me ride his personal bike, not only that, he left it behind for my remaining stay, and the bike is none other than a...Duende Pegoretti...AMAZING!!! :hello:

Yesterday, I was able to head out for another spin. I started from a small little town called Rye and rode to Point Nepean. Taken directly off the Visitor's Guide...

"The history of Point Nepean spans back thousands of years to the Boon wurrung people. Since then the park has been used to quarantine people arriving in Victoria, defence forts (where the first shots were fired on WWI and the first allied shots in WWII) and for military training (officer cadets)."

I must say, it's a pretty neat experience. They have good quality roads (about 5 km one way) meandering through the park, with many historic landmarks that you can stop and tour, take pictures etc.

I have a bunch of pictures that I want to share (which I will in another thread (http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=92268)) but to abide by the "one-picture-per member" rule, if I have to pick, I would go with this:

I did a quick little mixed terrain / bike camping trip with some friends last night. Rode down the 1 from SF to Santa Cruz. The picture is from the top of the Planet of the Apes old stagecoach route / dirt detour around Pacifica.
http://timmybphotography.com/bikes/boulder_pota.jpg
We also road single track around Wilder park just before getting into SC, which was somewhat interesting considering my friends were on CX bikes and I was on my rando bike w/ slicks and road shoes. I lost my sleeping pad off the rack somewhere in Wilder. Kind of a bummer considering it was brand freakin' new :crap: . All in all it was good fun. Got in over 100 miles... and the ride ended with oatmeal stout and delicious pizza. We camped at New Brighton state beach. I met Paul / Rock Lobster today. If only if only I had enough money to swing a new bike from him :bike: .

Edit: to "relate this to the actual riding I do;" I like riding dirt. I like riding on pavement. I like bike camping. Lately I've been crazy busy, but also have just had little motivation to ride much more than my commute. I guess I'm sort of burnt out on doing the same training rides every day and am in a slump, so the frequency of non-commute/errands rides has decreased for me. That being said, when I DO actually find the time / energy to ride, which lately has worked out to be every week or two, I've end up doing >100 mile mixed terrain rides / camping trips.

I love just how smooth that trail is, its so nice to take it instead of the C&O on a loaded up touring bike. Its the greatest thing...

I sometimes stop and ride there if I am driving to DC at the wrong time of day and want to wait out traffic.

I saw a coyote today...my first time ever. I was driving up the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu and watched a coyote try to cross the highway. He got about half way across, and then turned back. Watched him try it again twice and both times turned back. Never saw one before. At first, thought it was a dog. But had a very good look because of the slow moving traffic. I was just riding around and checking out the scenery and exotic cars, but seeing the coyote was today's high.

Thanks all! I always ride with an ultrapod http://www.industrialrev.com/ultrapod-i.html and shoot with a Canon S95. In the woods in the summer, the light is never very bright from all of the trees so I shoot at iso 800, to avoid blur. And I set the camera to use "foliage" mode to get the colors to pop. .

Next I set the self timer to 20 seconds and to take 3 shots.

I took this one in the fall and dig it:
