Is there any practical difference between running, on a fixed gear bike, a 50t chainring & an 18t cog or running a 48t chainring and a 17t cog? The gear inches are 75 and 76.25, respectively.
thanks,
Chris

No.....Other than in some theoritical world bigger rings and cogs last slightly longer. Or maybe you prefer the 75" gear over the 76".

I would choose the chainring that is more likely to work with alternative cogs. In this case, what are you more likely to want:
1) a 50 ring with 17 or 19 cog
or
2) a 48 ring with 16 or 18 cog ?
The one that is most likely to give you better options may be the better choice.
Also, bigger front and back is a teeny, teeny bit more efficient than smaller.
