View Full Version : Same HTA, different fork rakes.

I've been thinking hard about getting a new Pegoretti frame. While looking more closely at the frame geometry chart, I noticed that Mr. Pegoretti specs a fork with a 45mm rake. This fork would be mated to a frame with a 73 degree HTA. My Serotta frame, which has an identical HTA, was spec'ed with a 43mm rake fork. The trail would be reduced slightly, but I'm not sure how handing would be different. I'm not sure the difference would be noticable to me.

What is the difference? If Dario Pegoretti is viewing, maybe he could share his thoughts.

2mm of rake difference will likely not be noticeable
as either "rake" or resultant trail. however, technically,
the 45mm fork will be a lively ride. howwwwwwwweva',
rake/trail is only part of the equation; the front center
distances on both bikes could be totally different from
each other and still have the same rake/trail. that will
be more telling than anything.
hey - thanks for reading.

Please don't hit me - whats a "front center" distance?

I always thought my serotta atlanta cornered like a cruise ship. It has a 43 raked fork. Would a 45 make it corner faster? Honestly...I'm not trying to stir up trouble!!!

shinomaster-issimo...
any single measurement taken out of
context won't be very telling. cornering
with either rake will still depend on cg,
wheelbase, and operator skill.

what is cg? I know my operating skill is dubious.....All I know I can descend faster around corners on other frames like my hyper cannondale.. I was wondering if the fork could be a way to improve the handeling of the bike.

cg- center of gravity maybe

or

maybe

the list could go on forever

Hey Shino -

I think this change would most likely fall under the " not really better or worse....just different" umbrella. You might like it....you might not. There is no way to tell unless you try it.

center of gravity.
as far as the wondering goes, think of a bicycle
as a complete unit and without considering the
fork as a component; if its design is rationally
integrated, everything should work. if it doesn't,
the cause isn't necessarily the fork.
