Very sad.

The accident happened about 6:20 p.m. Tuesday off eastbound SR-56 just past the Camino del Sur exit, west of Black Mountain Road.

Saranita was driving eastbound at an estimated 65 to 80 mph when she began to change lanes. She saw a vehicle in the far-right lane, overreacted and steered the SUV hard to the right, the CHP said. The SUV traveled up a 15-foot grassy embankment, plowed through a chain-link fence and overturned on the elevated bike path.

As the SUV overturned, it struck Venuto and Herdelin-Doherty. Venuto was pronounced dead at the scene by San Diego Fire-Rescue Department paramedics.

There was a thread (http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=91369) about this. Sad indeed... one of life's absurd moment.

That is indeed scary cause I ride on that path 5+ times a month. It's nicely fenced and paved and runs for miles but you're next to speeding vehicles the whole time. Another cyclist was killed by an allegedly drunk driver in a pickup a little over a month ago close to Encinitas. My friend who decided not to ride that brevet ended up consoling the fiancee at the hospital then had to go and retrieve the couple's vehicle in Escondido.
