View Full Version : Maintenance friendly rear hub?

The bearings on my rear AC hub are in the process of going south. I normally do my own bike maintenance, but my jaw dropped when I looked over the maintenance instructions (http://amclassic.com/tech/Hub_Overhaul.html) for this hub.

I'd like to get another rear wheel built up and would appreciate comments on other quality lightweight (rear) hubs with quiet freewheeling which are significantly easier to maintain, especially bearing replacement.

Thanks,
Barry

Shimano or Campag., I doubt you'll ever need to replace bearings and periodic maintenence is easy.
Sorry for the boring answer.
BTW - The "maintenence" instructions for your hubs are really total overhaul instructions and are not bad at all...they are very thorough which is a good thing. You won't find other hubs to be easier for total overhaul. For instance you will need special tools to yank parts of CK hubs.

Give Am Classic a call. They will help you with the bearing change instructions, it's actually faily simple. I've had terrific customer service from them.

Thanks guys! It would be great if I could replace the bearings without a total disassembly.

Run a freewheel bike and go back to cup / cone hubs.
