View Full Version : do you have more than one bike from the same maker?

I generally dont have more than one bike from the same brand/maker at any one time, however, some people here seem to get all their bikes from the same place. I would love to see some cool photos of a bunch of matching bikes and also some reasoning behind this kind of behavior. Who has the most bikes from one brand? I think Mr. President is up to 5 IF's?

3 Crumptons, 2 Parlees, 2 Colnagos.

When I get more than one from a maker it's because I believe in his/their construction quality and I'm looking for a variation in ride qualities. For example Z1x is quintessential Parlee (IMO) and Z5 is superlight but with a rock solid quality reputation at stake. Colnago EP is solid and has the exceptional Saronni paint scheme, and the CX1 is Colnago as a modern Asian frame, blending stiff with enough comfort and that great Colnago geometry.

Just two for me at any one time.

Two Calfees, two Schneiders, two Cannondales. Now I'm down to one of each of these.

I had these two for a while. I really like Colnago stuff, the fit for me is good and it makes it easy to set them up since these two are the same basic geo. The rationale for me with these two is that they were different materials. However, I am considering buying another Colnago (C-50 or EPS) and keeping the C-40 as a rain bike/crit.

i work at a cannondale dealer, so that probably helps. i got the caad9 first, then it was time for a cross bike, and the temptation for twins was too much to pass up on.

As of a couple of days ago I am back to having 3 Serottas.
One is a custom to me Legend.
I got that back in 2004, the whole process as well as the excellent end result sold me on the brand. Still have that one and probably always will.
Two years ago I got a bare Serotta Ti all-rounder across the hall. It was barely used, happens to fit perfectly and it's a great dirt road bike.
Last week, same seller, put up a coupled Legend travel bike. Price was impossible to resist. It may not see any travel duties for a few years, but couldn't pass it up.

I also have a Goodrich and a Mariposa that I ride regularly. Would gladly have another of each if it was available.

I would say that I have strong loyalty to all 3 brands.

What tempts me otherwise: Weigle.

Hampsten Giro 88 and a Tournesol.

The Giro came first from across the hall. I then met Steve shortly after in Seattle in order to get more info on the bike. He was great; spent time with me, talked bikes, cooking, travel and such.

Steve is also my size so I got another Hampsten model, the Tournesol, this year at his yard sale.

The rationale was simple; they build great riding bikes of steel that are classic in design. So, I'm a proud owner of a 80's designed race bike, just like Andy rode to his Giro 1988 victory and an all purpose, go anywhere, do anything bike for my current fat tire reality.

When customs cost so much, why roll the dice each time? I know who my go to guy is for a great bike, he has earned my business. That is my perspective though, by no means the only one either.

Yea, as my signature file shows, I have 2 Merckx's. The Corsa hasn't been getting ridden much lately but it does get ridden. It really rides quite nice and is fitted with 9 spd compared to the other 2 which are 10's. Not a lot of difference, a little smoother shifting between gears but you really don't notice it much.

Ray
05-28-2011, 05:25 PM
Two Spectrum ti. Pretty similar, but the second one has slightly more relaxed geometry and handling, more clearance for fatter tires/fenders, and S&S couplers. With the amount of riding I'm doing lately, its almost silly to have two but there's no way I'm selling the first one (best riding/handling bike I've ever thrown a leg over) and I don't want to get rid of the more practical one, so they both stay. Maybe I'll get hardcore again someday - stranger things have happened.

When I got the first one, I knew I'd finally found THE bike, so I got another one built to a slightly more practical spec. Love 'em both.

Wow. I feel so pedestrian with my pair (+frame) of Specializedeseses.

I normally don't have more than one of a kind running around, but I *do* normally have more than one road bike.

I usually end up buying an S-Works, ride it for a few years, get tired of it, sell it, miss it, and buy another. Repeat that process 6 times and you've got my history.

I'm still looking for a Master Olypmic in the blue decor paint with Superbe Pro on it. Coupla teammates of mine in college had em. Way nifty.

I have two IF's: a Planet Cross and a Crown Jewel. I got the Planet Cross first, through the shop I worked for and when my wife got pregnant I decided that if I wanted another custom I had better buy it NOW, before all of my expendable income dried up. I was living in San Francisco and wanted to go with a local builder for a little variety and to support a small shop but IF really nailed the Planet Cross, the EP price on the CJ was hard to turn down, and the turnaround time was quick which made the decision pretty easy. I love my IF's but the next bike will be something different; probably an off-the-shelf carbon something or other just to mix things up a bit. I'll try to get some decent photos together in the near future...

As a result of refinements in my fit, I have decided to sell off bikes that are less than ideal fit-wise, but have/have overlapped a number of bikes from the same maker.

Moots:

YBB (not going anywhere unless replaced by a Mooto-X YBB or RSL)
Psychlo-X (sold a while back to MIN, being replaced with a Kent Eriksen-built, Hampsten Strada Bianca)
Vamoots SL (not ideal fit, recently sold to xjahx)
Compact SL (not ideal fit, probably will go eventually)
Vamoots RSL

Serotta:

Ottrott SE (demo bike; oh so smooth but too small, sold to 54ny77; will replace with a custom one of these days)
MeiVici SE (bought used from the classifieds; not ideal fit, but one of the best-riding bikes I've ever ridden and the reference for the new custom SE; will sell eventually)
MeiVici GS (bought used from the classifieds; not ideal fit, stiffer than the SE; will sell eventually)
MeiVici SE (just arrived, just wow)

IF:

IF-built Hampsten Cinghiale Pro (Steve's personal bike bought on Hampco "yard sale"; not ideal fit, recently sold to Mr.President)
Ti Crown Jewel
Ti Deluxe (wife's mtb)

2 Litespeeds - Siena and the above AX

The custom bikes that were made for me are Richard Sachs 25th Anniversary Replica and Kish titanium cross/tourer. I used to have Adam Myerson's Richard Sachs cyclocross bike but I sold it, as it was too flexy for me.

Don't think I have a photo of the pair, but I own two Gazelle Champion Mondial frames. One is a 78 A-Frame, the other an early 80's AB-Frame. The AB is a lightly more aggressive geometry, short dropouts with no eyelets where the A-Frame has campy long drops with single eyelets front and back. The AB-frame is currently outfitted in 10sp campy centaur and gets a lot of miles on days I don't want to take the Serotta or the Fuji out. The A-Frame is my only 'full vintage' ride with period Nuovo Record - though I am highly considering putting the dual pivot brakes and tektro R200A levers back on it.

Three Iglehearts. The gf has one too, so four in the household. A guy up the street has four, so at least eight on my street that I know of.
