those are an EXACT copy of Planet-X brakes, which work excellently. if they are made the same, i wouldnt hesitate to buy them.

on my Merlin for the last 4000 miles or so...

These are sold under several names, one of which was rated in Velonews caliper test. I can't find a link right now, but I recall the brake modulating well, but not performing as well as some others due to poor pads.

I got the impression that Swiss Stops would make these pretty great performers.

Those are FEATHER brakes and they are excellent brakes. Swiss stop or Kool Stop pads MAKE a difference (for the better).

mine came from Planet-X loaded with Swiss Stops. great brakes, great pads.

Did Feather license the design? The Feather I have was machined in California.

Are these the dual pivot version or the single pivot lookalike? I'm considering the duals for a new build I'm working on and have been looking for rider reviews.

Eddie, since when have you been a Weight Weenie? ;)

To krhea:

The picture from Ebay sure looks like both are single-pivot brakes and the pads are not SwissStop.

However, they ARE "looking forwarder to your strong support."

I just pointed them out due to their good looks, cheap price, and alleged lightness. However, owning a carbon bike has made me interested in having one that emphasizes lower weight.

What dual pivot version? These things work like Zero Gravity brakes - the little black arm increases the leverage to the same level of double pivot brakes.

To my eye, the ebay brakes look like the forged version on the Planet-X site for $85. The Merlin brakes have that line by line look from machining - the Planet-X's CNC version which are $150.

According to the ebay seller this version of the brakes is a bit heavier, 225g, and are also dual pivot which the photos show to be true I believe.

Well, if you want to call that "double pivot", then every one of these is double pivot. But that isn't what is normally called a double pivot, since both arms pivot from the center post. The little side arm increases the leverage, but it isn't the same as a double pivot mech.

As stated earlier and in the ebay listing, these are the forged version. The CNC version weighs 205g, forged 225.

Uuuh, they are pretty much direct rip-offs . . .

And offered by the same seller as the "Feather" brake. But really, either their was a patentable feature with the little arm, or this is much less of a "rip off" than Campy's first double pivot brakes.

I have the ones from Planet X and they work as all of the brakes on my other bikes.

Angry,

That kind of pains me to see the barrel out that far on the caliper. Move it in and reset the cable at the clamp a little tighter please?

Campy didn't "rip-off" Shimano for the dual pivot brake design, because Shimano did not originate it. The first brake that used the dual pivot design was the Altenburger Syncron made in Germany starting from the 1960's:

http://www.mytenspeeds.com/My_TenSpeeds_1/Bicycles_Table/English_Bicycles/Phillips_Bicycles/PhillipsWPegBrakeCaliperRear.jpg

The Altenburger used two offset pivots, whereas Shimano and Campagnolo use one offset and one central pivot, but they all share the self-centering linkage mechanism and a leverage ratio of approx. 1.5:1. (By contrast, the Feather design has a similar leverage ratio, but does not have a self-centering mechanism.)
