If some of you are like me and have lower back pain that radiates down the leg, this article (http://velonews.competitor.com/2011/05/news/velonews-training-center-piriformis-syndrome-and-cycling_172757) might interest you.
I still haven't had the disk surgery and am not going to. Lots of stretching and core work is what my friend who is a pain doc has prescribed. I tried to get him to prescribe me a new SR 11 gruppo but United Health Care wouldn't go for it.

Good article and do avoid surgery if you can. Sometimes it's not possible.
I think you need to change health plans or at least get a policy modifier.

When I was in grad school I messed up my back weightlifting (bent over rows) and I'm pretty sure my sciatica-type pain that started soon after was due to that. I lived with it for a year or two.
Here's the good part: soon after I took up cycling (first time I really rode regularly since I was a little kid) the "pain radiating down my leg" symptoms went away. That was over 20 years ago and the sciatica has never come back.

I got rid of my sciatica with acupuncture and structural integration (or Rolfing, a form of bodywork/massage). Also helpful were core strengthening and stretching (including hamstrings along with the painful areas).
