A local kid that my son used to go to school with has been getting into cycling. He told me he was looking to buy a bike and when I heard what he was likely to be getting (new) for $1200 I offered to help him out and build up a bike off of EBay (and the Serotta Forum) for the same amount of dough more or less. Plus he would get to do the build with me.

Long story short, he is the now the proud owner of a Specialized Roubaix Pro with full a full Ultegra group that he had a hand in building. I really enjoyed the process. He had a good time on EBay, regularly sending me messages and links to parts, some of which I even followed up on.

It's now about a month later, and I just got this email from him:

Well, after this entire setup, i'm hooked. If you ever have an opportunity for me to help build up a bike please let me know because I am finding this to be extremely interesting and want to start one of my own projects once I have the ability to do so. I wanna go through the entire process of buying components/frames etc and see what expected costs are and what eventual sale value might be.

How cool is that?

I'm sure his parents / wallet will appreciate his new habit.

Pot would probably have been cheaper. ;)

Fantastic! Take him out for some rides and show him the ropes... easier to learn from a vet than the school of hard knocks...

It is the coolest. Great feel good moment for you and a whole new experience for him. There is no comparison between purchasing a frame, finding your own components and building it up compared to buying one pre built off the showroom floor.

It great to give back, to the next generation coming up

As the saying goes, better to give than receive...

I'm not so sure he's into cycling as much as making money. He's got you for the cheap labor...

Smart kid.

I think the cycling bug is there. He's training for STP in a day (206 miles).

It sounds like he's off to a great start and has the right people around him to guide him along the way.

Smart kid.

That is awesome. I did that for my son and one of his pals and we all enjoyed the process. Plus it's better to spend someone else's $$!

Nice work!

I'm engaged in a similar project at the moment and while time consuming, it has been great fun and very rewarding.
