View Full Version : Why doesn't Campy make stems & bars?

While counting sheep last night I thought of this question: why, do you think, Campy doesn't make stems or handlebars (or even fork) considering they do make seat post and wheels if product liability is their concern?
Perhaps this is a question without an answer, ie simply a calculated business decision. I suppose stems or bars are not considered part of a traditional "group"? Perhaps they soon will? Shimano does, well.. under "Pro" label now... and Sram - Truvativ though the latter existed first and mostly MTB.

maybe they feel that the market is saturated? I've often wondered why they don't make mountain components.

They did and it failed. Stick to what you're good at.

Tullio had an agreement with Cino Cinelli that they would not cross-pollinate. That agreement set a benchmark.

They made mountain components a decade or so ago and aside from the fact that they were bulbous, clunky and worked very poorly, they were fine.
I do think the stem and bar thing is interesting.

it's closer to 2 decades ago (1989 - 1994). Interestingly, the Centaur group name was first applied to an MTB group.

Not being plants, they obviously can't pollinate - perhaps you meant compete against each other?

What satisfying answer! I figured this is a dud question... it's a cool cycling factoid. Definitely ought to make into cycling trivia. Thanks a lot, merckx!

because stems and bars can only wear out and don't get worn in.

It is rumored that there was also one with Mavic, which when broken, opened the floodgates for Campagnolo rims and wheels.

opened the floodgates for Campagnolo rims and wheels.
Then we need Mavic to break the stem bar agreement as well... as I really like my campy wheels (except putting clinchers on).
