And as head of the Department of Transportation, LaHood noted his “concern” over the “way that bikers are treated when they are on streets.”

I like that it is put on the table(?), seemingly with some commitment.. I hope...(?), by someone of proper position and other than of the cycling community in the form of whine or cry out.

However, changing the American driving culture's sentiment toward letting anything hinder their movements on their turf and the notion of bicycle as something of a recreational toy and not a legit vehicle would be enormous huddle if not impossibility in entirety. All I personally could ask for at this point is to just bring up 'bicycles on the road' awareness - let alone the *the right for bicycles to be on the road* concept - to American public.. and the law enforcements. Many of the close encounters I've had are from, I'm convinced, that "bicycle" is simply not in these driver's (particularly more so in certain areas) daily driving consciousness.

I would like to see more signs with bicycle images on the roads. More emphasis in driver's ed would be nice. Public announcements or even billboard campaign would be great. Stronger national law to protect cyclist would be fantastic. :bike:
