I am a slacker this year and haven't been out as much for many reasons I will not get into (honey do list etc...)

But today I took my Bedford Touring bike out for a somewhat different ride. It was a really nice day... but I just did not feel like riding on pavement... Whuuut?

So - the Bedford and I decided to go off road. Now, lets be clear here. I am not talking 10 foot drops, or other foolishness... but I did do some 'serious' mountain bike trails...

What a blast! It was a little -ahem- frightening on some descents... you are up quite a bit higher - center of gravity - as you may guess... but overall it was a pleasant surprise! The 700c wheels roll over any ruts, roots, and small rocks without problem. I did do more on foot than typical... just not going to risk my proton's to the wilds entirely!

If you have a cross type bike, give it a shot!

I came home with a huge grin on my face. Thank GOD I have a triple... being out of shape is one thing... a road bike on mountain trails is another!

Try it!

:)

No camera, so no pics. Too bad!

one more side note for those who go to Pataptasco state park... Be careful if you swim in the river. They took out one dam and the entire river has changed. What used to be deep may not be... so don't just go use that rope swing you have used every year before... you might not walk home. :)

Glad you've discovered the fun which is riding drop bars and skinny tires on dirt. It's somewhat addicting, so be prepared!

I have taken my Bedford on some of the trails there as well. The bike liked them, I like them, the fenders did not. We should hook up some of the fire roads up up at liberty reservoir, that would be fun. Here are some photos Mike.

Yeah, I got some strange looks when I came down from the cascade falls trail to the parking lot...

My tires aren't exactly skinny... 35's...
