View Full Version : Is this helmet salvageable?

I had a run-in with a car door the other day. Luckily, my Ionos saved my melon from smacking into the pavement. Unfortunately, there's a small crack in the back now -- goes about halfway through the foam.
Is the helmet salvageable? Or am I stuck having to buy a new helmet? Thanks!

hey.. i'm no expert. just a rider like you but this is what my little voice inside is saying:
1. Are you willing to take the chance?
2. How much is your melon worth to ya?
2 cents: Get a new one. Get peace of mind.

Get a new helmet. Your head/life aren't worth taking a chance.......That helmet has done it's duty

No - get a new helmet. Very cheap insurance in the grand scheme.
Usually can find last year's colors on closeout anywhere.

Yeah... that's what I figured. Well, looking forward to trying on the Prevail then!

Even if there were no crack any good impact has got to compromise the helmet.
Get a new one.

it's toast IMO.
Call Giro - maybe they'll give you a few bucks toward a new one?

New brain bucket..doesn't Giro have a crash replacement policy? (don't know, don't sell saddles).

Like everyone else said...once a helmet has been impacted in a crash, even with no signs of cracking, it's done.
I'm not sure what insurance you have, but my Blue Cross pays $25 to a new helmet once a year. You might want to check your insurance for help...many do offer helmet rebates. There are some great deals on REI's Outlet section on UVEX and I saw one on BonkTown earlier at discount as well.

buying a new helmet is certainly much cheaper than buying a new head. I'm glad you're okay.

Just had to replace my first crashed helmet. Due to negligence of the city of Cincinnati I was fortunate to drop $150, but now my lid matches my 2011 team kits so silver lining and all that . . .

Btw, Bonktown has a similar color Lazer Helium right now! Totally different fit from GIro though. Best of luck to you.

any hit to a helmet compromises its ability to protect you even when there is no visible damage so ANY cracks mean it's trash.

That helmet is done.
The new super-light Giro has to be held to be believed....$250 (ouch) but absolutely a feather. Of course check the Prevail too
Here is what Giro's website has on crash replacement:
Does Giro have a crash replacement program?
Giro is interested in your safety and in advancing our state-of-the-art in head protection. If your helmet is involved in an accident you may be able to get a credit toward a new helmet from Giro by doing the following:
Send us:
a. Your damaged helmet
b. A copy of your dated cash register receipt
c. A letter describing your accident (in as much detail as possible)
Ship to:
GIRO
Consumer Service
735 Pacesetter Drive
Rantoul, IL 61866
If you have any questions about this program please call us at (800) 456-2355 or e-mail us at feedback@giro.com . Crash replacement program is available to U.S. customers only. Customers outside the U.S. should call (800) 456-2355 or e-mail us for information on the crash replacement program applicable to them.
Remember: NEVER wear a helmet that’s been involved in an accident.

it hurts spending $$s on something that still looks 90% BUT for me I would buy a new one.
