View Full Version : Extra short threadless adapter?

I'm trying to switch from a quill stem to threadless plus adapter on my waterford, and I'm running into the butting on the steerer before I can get the adapter as low in the headtube as I want; I'm thinking a shorter threadless adapter would do the trick perfectly, but there doesn't seem to be much information about how long they are online. Anybody know if they're all the same length, or if there are particularly short ones? (I have the Profile Design one on there now, and I could deal with it being about 20mm shorter.)

i was thinking about doing something similar to one of my bikes a while ago, and i think the bottom line is that threadless adapters are totally lame. why not just stick with a quill stem, or switch to a threadless headset and stem combo?

just a second opinion of course, no offense intended, something to think about.

I'm inclined to agree about adapters, but I haven't had an easy time finding bars that I like that don't have a 31.8 clamp, and I definitely don't want to give up on the lovely, matching pinstriped fork that came with the frame.

totally understand this. my only advice is keep looking, there are way more options for non OS bars than i originally thought there were too. i wound up fining a nice compact set of bars that worked with my quill stem, allowing me to get the best of what i needed without an adapter.

again, just a thought, i know i'm not answering your original question at all.

Look for a Cinelli quill adapter. I don't see anyone carrying them new, but they were pretty short, if I recall.

Have you seen the Velo-Orange combo? It's quite pretty for what it is.

Well, I think I might try the nitto threadless adapter. It is claimed to only have about 15mm of rise above the mininum insertion point, which seems like it should work well for me.

From what I've seen, the Nitto appears to be the shortest one currently available.

I have a profile design adapter also and even slamming it all the way down there is a gap because the gradual taper from 22.2mm to 28.6mm that takes about 15-20mm of spacers to cover up.

I found an adapter on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/BICYCLE-QUILL-STEM-EXTENDER-ADAPTOR-TUBE-1-1-1-8-/390309234478?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5ae03e472e#ht_640wt_906) that's effectively the same as the Nitto for a lot less. I have one 5mm spacer to cover the small gap between the headset and stem. Other than that it's as low as you can go.

Ritchey Classic Curve (http://www.ritcheylogic.com/dyn_prodfamily.php?k=394053) . I really like the shape of "compact" bars and this is the only one I found in silver. Otherwise I'd prefer using a quill stem on this frame because the oversize stem and bars looks big on this bike.

Just curious, but is your adaptor that much longer than your quill stem? Are you sure that's what you are hitting?

If it were me I'd remove the wedge and see if the rest of the adaptor slides all the way in, or at least a lot more.

The quill stem has an expander bolt as opposed to a wedge bolt. I tried a different quill stem (with a wedge bolt) and it went in the same distance.

I have two bikes with threadless adapters, one of those adapters is a Profile Design such as yours.

It is the shorter of the two, so I won't bother to measure it for you as you already are aware of its limitations.

There are framebuilders who also make threaded stems. I see no reason why they couldn't make a threadless adapter to meet your needs. The only difficulty I see would be getting an expander bolt of a shorter than standard length, but the builders would have more experience with that than I do.

I recommend you seek out some builders who offer such stems and drop them an e-mail.

Or, for that matter, a 1" quill stem with a 31.8 bar clamp. Can do.

The only other thing I can suggest is to look inside the steerer to make sure it’s clean and doesn’t have any burrs or metal from previous stem? Unless your steerer is really short I have a hard time picturing a stem adaptor like the one I used on my bike not going in all the way. I didn’t measure it, but it wasn’t significantly longer than a “7” quill and it went in all the way with ease.

I cut one down with a hacksaw and filed it smooth. Took 15 minutes. Job done.

I tend to agree with using quill stems but needs and wants... had the bars and the stem ready to go, but it was too high. I was going to cut the chamfer shorter but discovered with the cheap converter I had that the flared top section was actually too deep. Check that the bolt has sufficient thread, measure and tape it square, then cut.

Looks great, your solution seems to work.

I've come across the NITTO NEAT- M106 NAS.
Alex cycle lists it (in japan) in case someone wants
to check them out.
