Just starting to build up my Colorado III. Can I mix a 7800 or a 7900 DuraAce group with an Ultegra 6750 Compact Crank?

Thanks

I Have Mixed Ultegra With 7800 Parts Fd Rd Crank
Brakes Are Also Ok To Mix

7800 Parts With 7900 Crank
7800 Parts With 7900 Crank And Rd

I Have Been Told By The Lbs That The Brakes For 7900 Must Have The 7900 Shifters

On All The Above I Have Used The Sram Red Cassette

I have a 7800 group no crank, cassette or chain. A 7900 group no crank. I want to use a new Ultegra Compact crank with either the 7800 or 7900. Is there something I should be on the lookout for before I purchase the crank and BB?

Yes, just gotta use a 7900 FD with 7900 STI. It'll work great with just about any crank, inlcuding the 6750.

Shimano had replaced my 6600 series crank with the newer 6750 under warranty but also sent along a new 6700 chain. They said it will run better with the newer chain. I ran the 6750 crank with the 7800 set-up with no problems but did notice that is ran smooth with a 6700 chain and cassette. The 6600 cassette worked but not as nicely as the 6700.

I usually just mix and see what happens if I already have the parts on-hand. I am riding one bike with:

Ultegra 9 speed shifters
XT medium cage rear der
Campagnolo Racing T front der
Ritchey compact crankset
Wippermann Chain
SRAM cassettte

Works great. :)

This is actually on my climbing bike, a Madone SL. The gearing is setup with a 34 front and 32 large cog on the rear. Wonderful.

Here is a chart that I found when I was upgrading to 10 speed this winter.
