According to the study of 388,000 people Mac users are: better educated, healthier, more liberal, younger and more creative.

Sounds about right to me.

I'm a PC user trapped on a Mac machine. :D

Honestly, does this article say anything? Other than Macs are more expensive? If they compared Mac users vs. Thinkpad users, I think they'd be pretty similar demographically (actually, the tables might be turned b/c the Mac users might be dragged down by the trust fund hipsters). Or vs. Vaio users. Or any other similarly priced PC.

Slow news day, eh CNN?

Slow news day, eh CNN?

It is always a slow news day at CNN, they have like 2 reporters and
a vast staff of clowns and talking heads.

Back OnT, I am typing this on a MacPro and just bought a Thinkpad.
But then I mix Shimano, Campy and Suntour parts too.

Interesting thread. In terms of my personality, I'm probably more PCish...I'm not hip, I make no effort to be cool or fashionable, I'm corporate and mild mannered salt of the earth.

I have latest/greatest Mac 27 inch I7, which I'm totally in love with, a 160 gig Ipod and will be purchasing an Iphone as my next cell. Why? Their stuff works! It's easy to use, they have AMAZING customer service and my Mac is also my TV...I LOVE the 27inch display.

I think what might be interesting is to see if there is a correlation between liking Apple and Campagnolo...in other words...put your computer preference AND component preference.

I'm Apple and Campagnolo

I always like to be different and defy being stereotyped.
That said, I didn't read the article just went on what you guys said.

I'm with Mac only because its bulletproof and works. I tried to switch my Mom but she said since she's old, she's too old to switch. After going back to pc though she had to admit the Mac ran better, lasted longer, and didn't have "need to update to view" "add program" etc every 5 minutes.

I want to do other stuff (like get out and ride) and spend enough time on the computer as is. Computer as hobby has passed with me. Mac allows me to maximize my time using the computer, not fiddling with it.

I never knew that my early appreciation for tuna fish would lead me to becoming a Mac using later in life. All this Mac vs PC talk reminds me of George Carlin's "I'm a modern man"...

"I’m a modern man, a man for the millennium. Digital and smoke free. A diversified multi-cultural, post-modern deconstruction that is anatomically and ecologically incorrect.

I’ve been up linked and downloaded, I’ve been inputted and outsourced, I know the upside of downsizing, I know the downside of upgrading. I’m a high-tech low-life. A cutting edge, state-of-the-art bi-coastal multi-tasker and I can give you a gigabyte in a nanosecond!

I’m new wave, but I’m old school and my inner child is outward bound. I’m a hot-wired, heat seeking, warm-hearted cool customer, voice activated and bio-degradable. I interface with my database, my database is in cyberspace, so I’m interactive, I’m hyperactive and from time to time I’m radioactive.

Behind the eight ball, ahead of the curve, riding the wave, dodging the bullet and pushing the envelope. I’m on-point, on-task, on-message and off drugs. I’ve got no need for coke and speed. I've got no urge to binge and purge. I’m in-the-moment, on-the-edge, over-the-top and under-the-radar.

A high-concept, low-profile, medium-range ballistic missionary. A street-wise smart bomb. A top-gun bottom feeder. I wear power ties, I tell power lies, I take power naps and run victory laps. I’m a totally ongoing big-foot, slam-dunk, rainmaker with a pro-active outreach. A raging workaholic. A working rageaholic. Out of rehab and in denial!

I’ve got a personal trainer, a personal shopper, a personal assistant and a personal agenda. You can’t shut me up. You can’t dumb me down because I’m tireless and I’m wireless, I’m an alpha male on beta-blockers.

I’m a non-believer and an over-achiever, laid-back but fashion-forward. Up-front, down-home, low-rent, high-maintenance. Super-sized, long-lasting, high-definition, fast-acting, oven-ready and built-to-last! I’m a hands-on, foot-loose, knee-jerk head case pretty maturely post-traumatic and I’ve got a love-child that sends me hate mail.

But, I’m feeling, I’m caring, I’m healing, I’m sharing-- a supportive, bonding, nurturing primary care-giver. My output is down, but my income is up. I took a short position on the long bond and my revenue stream has its own cash-flow. I read junk mail, I eat junk food, I buy junk bonds and I watch trash sports! I’m gender specific, capital intensive, user-friendly and lactose intolerant.

I like rough sex. I like tough love. I use the “F” word in my emails and the software on my hard-drive is hardcore--no soft porn.

I bought a microwave at a mini-mall; I bought a mini-van at a mega-store. I eat fast-food in the slow lane. I’m toll-free, bite-sized, ready-to-wear and I come in all sizes. A fully-equipped, factory-authorized, hospital-tested, clinically-proven, scientifically- formulated medical miracle. I’ve been pre-wash, pre-cooked, pre-heated, pre-screened, pre-approved, pre-packaged, post-dated, freeze-dried, double-wrapped, vacuum-packed and, I have an unlimited broadband capacity.

I’m a rude dude, but I’m the real deal. Lean and mean! Cocked, locked and ready-to-rock. Rough, tough and hard to bluff. I take it slow, I go with the flow, I ride with the tide. I’ve got glide in my stride. Driving and moving, sailing and spinning, jiving and grooving, wailing and winning. I don’t snooze, so I don’t lose. I keep the pedal to the metal and the rubber on the road. I party hearty and lunch time is crunch time. I’m hanging in, there ain’t no doubt and I’m hanging tough, over and out!"

I'm old enough to have used punch cards, main frames..etc, so I'm really a unix guy at heart. I've switched back and forth between mac/pc depending on which machine my then employer dropped on my desk. However, once the mac os become BSD unix under the hood, I bought a mac for home. Perfect interface for my family and an OS i can root around. Everyone is happy.

I'm a PC guy but I do find Windows 7 very "Mac" like. I learned computers on a Mac but switched over when I went to Networking school.
As far as constant updates and having to make sure antivirus apps are current, that's what you get for being #1.... Why write a virus for a computer system that only about 12 people in the whole world use?
EDIT: Campy and think about it. I can open up my PC and repair it (when necessary) and I can do the same with Campy. With Shimano if it breaks you buy a new piece (go to the manufacturer), pretty much the same with a MAC....Accordingly, PC users should all be Campy users, but then again, I think all users (period) should be Campy users. Something tells me I am 180 degrees out on this though

I'm PC all the way. ALL the companies I've worked for in the last 15 years use PC's as their main computer. All my software is PC.

Every professional graphic designer I've ever worked with uses MAC. This includes a couple of 30 year olds and a few in their 50's. These guys had the only MAC's in the company.

This is a bit like studying BMW owners and finding that they are: better educated, higher incomes, douchebags.

Really though, you'd have to look at correlations of those characteristics, I bet on average you'd find that high education correlates with health and creativity, and youth correlates with liberal... would like to see the regressions on these.

I prefer Mac for my music, hipster, vid, iphone, side of me. At work, we are PC exclusive. PCs seem to work too but not as well. They are not intuitive, too many strokes to do simple tasks, and they do slow down and often times just stop! :crap:

I think a lot of it has to do with apple early involvement in education. I remember that a lot of schools had Macs when I was younger because of deals struck with school districts.

I started on a mac in 7th grade learning BASIC. As I got older, almost all my classes that involved computer were MAC based (except my typing class and I hated that anyway.)

I become comfortable with macs early on and it stuck with me. I think it was a smart move on apples part.

I teach about 30 students a year to make their own frames in my framebuilding classes. Somewhere between 80 to 90 percent of them use Macs. Of course the demographics of a typical framebuilding class student is nowhere near the center of any bell curve. More than 50% of them come from some kind of art or related background. Being Vegan and tattooed is common too. They are all into some kind of practical or utilitarian bicycle. It is an interesting bunch and a fun group to teach. I'm pretty sure most of them are not worried about how they fit into the crowd or go about seeking approval from their peers (or anybody else).

Mac, even at work.

Like with Campy owners, chicks dig Mac owners. Which is why the John Hodgman guy never gets the girl but the guy who starred with Bruce Willis does.

If Mac is Campy and Shimano is PC, what is SRAM? Linux?

Nice monologue from Carlin, a great comedian that could spin insight into humor.

The phrase "Lies, damned lies and statistics" comes to mind about the survey cited in the OP. Mine the survey data enough and it will back-up any stereotype of computer user the CNN story wants to cast.

My computer is neither Mac nor PC, using Linux likely puts me in the 1 percenter category - misfits that choose the alternate path so as to make the easy more difficult.

Thinkpad (an old one, a real IBM one) and Dura Ace (the new stuff, compact).

I did have Campagnolo once upon a time, but it seems to have become a snob thing.

Apple? The ipad is kind of fun and easy. I like the touch screen and the finger gestures interface. I'm tempted, but that's as far as I'm going for now. When ipad 3 comes out I'll take another look.

If Lenovo comes out with form factor dimensions similar to the Macbook Air I might dive in.

MacBook Pro running Windows here, a conflicted soul. I do so for (perceived) improved compatibility with software, often developed for Windows and catching up with the Mac only much later (SportTracks comes to mind).
I love the hardware and my iPod Touch, soon to be an iPhone.

I've said it before:
Mac= control freaks
PC= out of control freaks

Mac is great for people who have a well defined use for
a computer. They can live in a well ordered smooth
running environment that helps them get stuff done

for people who want more control and a little wild west
uncertainty, those who like to tinker with hardware and
have access to the innards there is PC

As PC's adopt a more Mac like interface they are getting
friendlier but they are still no match for the Mac system
of vetting and controlling all hardware and software to
insure compatability.

I appreciate both depending on what I'm trying to do.

It isn't. That might have been true in the mid-late 80s, but once Campagnolo Ergo was out, Campy took its rightful place on the throne back from Shimano. Seriously...try ergos before you say that.

Since you are asking....Wife and I have 3 Macs(one mac mini, 2 laptops), wife has a first gen Ipad, oldest son mac mini, laptop, 2 iphones, young son, mac mini...

I use a PC at work for point of sale and it is truly a POS. Gone south twice in the last year, once because it got so corrupted with virus' that it stopped(NEVER had a mac virus). Next time it crumps, into the trash, get 2 mac minis and a online POS system. Like Campagnolo, I get it cuz it works better, I don't care if it's initially more expensive. Like any tool, when you don't pay a lot for a tool, whadyaget? Cheap tools.

Let's just hope most people keep using PCs...the reason people don't normally get mac viruses is that programmers don't bother going after mac users because most are on PCs...and the corporations, the real targets most of the time, are on PCs. From my understanding, which could be off, Macs aren't any better for stopping viruses, there just are few people bothering to make them.

I have always heard this and certainly seems reasonable, however, I also ASSUME that since MAC restricts software development the source code (for lack of a better term) is not as readily available to amateur hackers.

I'm a PC user but not a fan. I detest all the problems that the various Microsoft Windows has had, and I detest that every two to three years they come out with a new version forcing you to eventually upgrade. Prone to viruses, adware and spyware and the attacks just pour in against it thus needing constant upgrading and the resulting defense systems slow the OS down; then it requires constant maintenance so as not to get as many errors. And with every new release more and more system system requirements are required which means you have to keep upgrading your computer to keep the performance up. But it has the most amount of software support howbeit expensive because of all the codes that have to be written into any software to make it compatible with Windows.

I haven't use Mac, but I know it's limited to Apple manufactured hardware, and the library of software is far smaller then PC, and it's more expensive to purchase a computer based on Mac then it is on PC.

I like Linux far better, its free, it's less complicated, easy to use, most programs are free in fact it has the largest free and open source software of any other OS but fewer commercial software, it's reliable, has good performance, and needs less resources to run then either PC or MAC. A Linux based computer and software would be less expensive to purchase then either a PC or especially a Mac; but there's not enough software support...yet, Asia and Europe are getting very sick and tired of Microsoft's crap so they could lead the charge to support Linux; one can only be hopeful.

But I admit, computers is not my knowledge area, so maybe I'm wrong, but I do know I hate Microsoft for the reasons I mentioned.
