Well, I was away for a bit... dealing with some stuff in my life, but I'm back now... so you're all stuck with me.

I know compared to many of you, 1000 is like being a junior member of the forum, but I figured I'd make a point of saying something meaningful to me, that is also bike related. Some of this is new, but I've posted some of it before.

I've been thinking a lot about reclaimed / salvaged lumber, namely using it in new construction. I think it adds character (even if it is refinished and looks new) as well as meaning and continuity, and a reminder of a time before us.

I ride by a set of rail road tracks that are no longer used, and it go me wondering if you could ever melt those rails down and get steel of good enough quality to building a bike frame. Not sure if it is possible, but I think that would be a pretty interesting project, to be able to ride on a bike made out of the same steel that was such a huge part of the development of this country. If anyone knows if this is possible, I'd love to chat.

And now, a bit about my preferences.

I was at Cornell undergrad when I first saw this bike:

and it just spoke to me, the colors anyway. So here are some additional images that I've found over the years, created, or been inspired by. Hopefully when I get my first custom, the design will live up to my expectations.

I have a friend that has bought a ton of barnboard from VT barns being torn down. He then makes furniture out of it. Cool stuff.
