Funny how little tidbits stir the imagination. I wanted to share this because I really chuckled at the irony when I realized it.
There is a city (maybe a town) up the north coast of British Columbia called Prince Rupert.
Prince Rupert is a protected deep water harbour and is fishing and logging town as well.
It is a lovely spot, but rough and moss covered due to the 356 days a year of rain.
Prince Rupert was founded in 1910 by Charles Hays who was at the time the general manager of the Grand Trunk Railroad ( I have admitted my goofyness about railroad history on these pages before ).
On April 14, 2011 the Prince Rupert Port Corporation christened and launched a new patrol vessel named the MV Charles Hays. A fitting tribute to the founder of their city.
But, take a look at that date. Would any of you think that April 14 is an odd date to launch a new ship? Sort of like having a 13th floor in an office tower.
April 14 is of course the date that the MV Titanic struck an iceberg in the Atlantic.
Here is the historical irony. Mr. Charles Hays, the founder of the city and the namesake of the new ship, was a passenger on the Titanic and died at sea.
I suspect there may be a red face or two at the Port Corporation offices.
