View Full Version : Can I buy anything from eBay without PayPal?
While making arrangements to pay for an item I want to buy on eBay I was told by the vendor that I must have a PayPal account. He told me that eBay now requires all payments to go through PayPal.
Is that correct? It doesn’t seem right to me. Last time I bought bike parts a while back I just used a credit card and all was fine. I did a Google search but the answer seems unclear since the policy has been challenged in court. Is this vendor leveling with me or could he just prefer PayPal?
Anyone buy anything without PayPal recently?
TIA,
Rick

I've got a couple of bikes on there now and I don't recall being asked a choice about what payments I'll accept when I listed them. I think PayPal was the only choice.
I believe that it is only PayPal, as they are owned by EBay.

It's not correct, pay however you and the vendor agree. Ebay bans sellers from saying they'll accept money orders, but there is nothing they can do to stop you and the vendor from setting that up. I had someone here recommend Dwolla and it's terrific for sellers...tell your vendor that Dwolla will only cost him a quarter and we'll see if he changes his mind.
Ebay does have rules about only offering buyer protection for certain payments...paypal and a couple of other online payment types (not Dwolla). That won't effect your vendor and I'd think he'd prefer a transaction without protection.

Try to communicate that you are interested in an alternative methods-
They may just go with it if it's secure safe and reliable. But in all honesty PP is probably your only option especially if they are a large seller. Good luck

If PayPal is only option I think I'll pass.
I spoke with the vendor on the phone yesterday and he told me that their store accepts major credit cards when the item is purchased directly from them, but that since I had already asked a question about an item listed on the eBay site that they can’t circumvent the eBay process for fear of retribution, and they apparently do a lot of business through eBay.
I don’t have or want a PayPal account, and additionally the listed item is not exactly what I’d buy. It’s a customized item and as I understand it there is no way for the “buy it now” eBay listing to be modified to make it “custom” after I’ve purchased the “listed” item. It’s all handled electronically and the computer program isn’t set up to alter the item into what I was quoted. The whole thing appears so incredibly rigid. The vendor quoted the price for customizing into a different item, but I have no way to enter the order correctly (again, as I understand it). And working outside of eBay is not a great option (not that it helps me since his eBay quoted price is actually lower than their regular store price).
I guess my options include getting someone to buy the item for me directly from the store and pay a little more, or ask the vendor if they would create a new listing for exactly what I want so I can then buy it. That however would require someone with PayPal to process payment for me (my son offered so it’s doable).
I’m thinking it’s not worth the hassle to use eBay at all.
Thanks all for help.

you can pay with a card for ebay through paypal without a paypal account.
if that makes any sense whatsoever.
paypal processes the payment from your card but you do not need a paypal account.
sort of like a "guest checkout" option at other online stores to buy without creating an account.

I do it this way. I have never been interested in opening a PayPal account.

Yes, that makes sense if that's the way it can work.
I'll ask them to create a new listing to match exactly what they quoted and see what they say.
Thanks,
Rick

Problem is Buyers think they have oodles of protection if they use Paypal. They are dead wrong.

I pay with a credit card using my Pay Pal account.
The credit card company is always more responsive to problems than Pay Pal.
I believe you can still pay with a check on ebay, but it's best to work that out with the seller before the auction ends.

I used to buy things on ebay using a credit card through PayPal. Then I got to their maximum dollar limit for using that system so I opened a PayPal account.
When I tried to withdraw $$ from my account it had been drained and I got a verbal "finger" about my predicament from "Ben Had".
After contacting PayPal I decided the hassle of dealing with their procedures to solve the crime was more trouble than the relatively small amount of $$ I lost. I figured it was cheap tuition as to why I shouldn't have any involvement w/PP again.

+2, well.... define account. I mean I give Paypal just enough info on me in regards to name, address, phone contact and credit card number. One the transactions were completed (been a couple of years since I used ebay) I would immediately edit my info as to remove my credit card number, I would recommend doing this after you get the tracking info from UPS or whom ever does the shipping. Pretty easy, always had good luck but always bought from sellers with a close to 100% positive feedback ;)
fwiw I'm pretty oldschool, cash and carry, heck it's been so long since I used my card I'm not even sure it's still valid.

oops didn't read your post before I posted, that's a nasty a spin on things, must say I am leery of Paypal.
and now that I recall my lbs sold a bike on a ebay auction and as a seller he didn't like it because they actually held back the funds, I don't even know if he got the money, something to do with a lack of history as a seller/paypal user. I guess Pay pal is really that bad. On the other hand I know antique dealers that run numerous auctions with it and are comfortable. It's a crap shoot mostly because their policies are a hassle.

Pay pal is a good system and it seems to work well for most things. Sure, there are going to be occasional issues, but they have customer service that has aided me through issues over the phone and they are timely with funds.
I always find it curious that folks would rather send a check with routing and account number, name and address (maybe your wifes name) rather than an impersonal paypal payment.

I think you can pay for an ebay auction with a check if you select 'local pickup' during check-out, then just send a check.

Actually I strongly disagree, they do have oodles of protection if they use paypal because ebay's default decision is the seller has to accept a refund.
As a seller I go out of my way to avoid paypal for various reasons that I've discussed in other threads. For some sellers it's great...others...not so much. I've been put in the "paypal completely sticks it to me" camp.
