Forgive me if it has been asked. I did a quick search and didn't come up with this one......

My wife has the really nice old alloy Chorus 10 speed shifters that she loves. She laid it down last year and bent the matching Chorus rear derailleur.

I'm wondering if the Athena 11 speed rear derailleur will carry a 10 speed chain OK or if the cage gets too narrow.

She is running a touring setup 13X29 Campy cassette with Stronglight crank arms and 44X30 TA rings. 11 speed chains are too tight on the TA rings. 10 speed is marginal on this set up but works pretty well with a compact FD.

Anybody try this?

I'm using a Chorus 11 RD with a 10sp Shimano chain with no issues...

The only difference of significance is the actuation ratio. It's not quite the same as 10 speed. You'll get a slight amount of overshifting, but the amount is too small for most people to notice. Overshifting is usually much more tolerable than undershifting.

It'll work fine w/o any modification.

Hey OP...... worked like a charm.

The spring in the RD is tight and has a nice return on the thumb. Very easy to set up.

My wife is very happy and thus so am I.

Thanks again!!!!

A 11 RD works in a 10 speed drive train??? Thought that was not possible 100%

As I explained, the only difference is a small change in the actuation ratio. I've used a Campy 10 speed RD with 11 speed, but since the RD would undershift slightly, I make small modification to the cable clamp bolt to reduce the lever arm lenght slightly and increase the travel a bit.

Dave, do you have the pic of that? I'm gonna try it?
