Never installed cantis and noticed a majority of CX bikes have a front cable hanger for the Cantilever Brakes. Do you need this? What is the function of the Cable hanger?

It is to keep the brake cable aligned with the straddle cablei for more efficient braking. Fewer turns = better braking.

Can't use canti's without the hanger. The distance from the hanger to canti brakes also determines the amount of braking force versus modulation.

Avid had an excellent write up on canti geo. Should be able to find it on the web.

******ALL bikes using cantilevers have a front cable hanger (cx, mountain, touring, ?, ALL). You may have seen some using mini V brakes.

Interesting.
We just received the Paul canty touring brakes along with our new Kish cross frames. Jim really likes these brakes. We went with his recommendation.
Didn't come with the hanger!
I'm running Shimano 7800. Michelle using Chorus 11.

Hangers aren't usually included because of the preferences of the riders regarding type and length of the hanger as well as 1" or 1 1/8" steer tube sizes.

Cantis have to have a 'stop' for the housing to push against when applying the brake. Just like shifters have a 'stop', DT or headtube mounted, for the housing to push against when shifting. A must with cable actuated systems. A V brake or mini V has a stop also, it's just on the brake arm, like any side pull brake.

if you look at the way the brakes work, as OP mentioned, you really need some kind of cable stop for the housing, how else would they work? there are various types of hangers available, depends on the frame type and what you prefer. stolen google image:

Tektro makes them, and they're cheaper elsewhere, ie:

If you don't want to use cantis and a cable hangar, you can use mini v-brakes, like the TRP CX-9 (http://www.trpbrakes.com/category.php?productid=1040&catid=185). For my Kish and Serotta cross bikes, I lowered the stem so far that I couldn't use a cable hangar and switched to the TRPs for the front brake. They work great (stop better than cantis) and much easier to set up. You don't need special levers or a travel agent for these, since they have shorter arms and regular brake levers have sufficient pull on these brakes.

Here's a review:http://www.cyclingnews.com/reviews/trp-cx-9-cyclo-cross-brakes

NOTE: the red CX-9s match that Kish red paint perfectly.
