The last couple of days I have been hearing songs on the radio and Pandora that have been triggering memories of being a kid during the summer. They aren't always considered great ones, but they were getting lots of play back in the day. Now, some songs can trigger images and memories of feelings, events, and even smells of summer.

I just heard this one and it brings back images of spending summers on a farm, muscle cars, basket ball, and kissing girls into the warm summer nights.

There are more but this is a good start for me. What songs do it for you?

OK, I tried to listen but 45 seconds into it and it was still nothing but noise. :) Now my Summer song is :TADA: "In the Summertime" by Mungo Jerry. It was popular in the Summer of 1970, I was single and moving to San Diego w/dreams of living at the beach. After a wake-up call about "I can't afford these" vs. "these roaches look too tough to me" I rented a decent place with a great view over the beach. It was quite a change for a Chicago boy.

I didn't say it was a great one, just something that got lots of air play back in the day. :)

A few more in no particular order...

Glenn who??

It's Confucius to respect the elders. :D

Actually I've forgotten and did not associate *being ancient* with "The Letter" or "Whiter Shade of Pale" until I saw them youtube vids just now... OMG  They are my favorites regardless (I can listen to "Whiter.." in loop endlessly) and oh do they bring the memories back... the sound of jet plane at the very end of "The Letter" rattling the carp out of the huge jukebox speakers at this joint we used to hang out....

"Whiter Shade of Pale" definitely and always makes me think of Summer evening... one of those sunset...

Hendrix's Cry of Love album back cover... always struck me as iconic 'one those' summer evening picture... for some reason always made me think of Neil Young's lyrics "every junkie's like a setting sun..."

I saw Zappa n MOI play once in a suburban strip mall bar in 70s. The last Zappa album I bought was, I think, "Shut up and play yer guitar", a 3 LP set... prolly can't appreciate unless yer a guitar player, unfortunately. Sheer size of cigarette butt mound in his big ashtray in his shows told me he couldn't have lived to a ripe old age... too bad but we all die and some of us just burn faster and brighter.

This may sadly betray my relative youth.

Summer of 1996. Still a few months away from getting my license, but a couple buddies had already gotten theirs. Spent a good chunk of the summer riding around, listening to the Smashing Pumpkins, and 1979 was their biggest song getting radio play at the time. Always brings me back to that time:

Billy, you picked a good one. Now give us one that wasn't recorded before you were born.

I don't know if there have been any good ones since I was born!
