Should be a 29.

A properly adjusted r.der. should be able to handle a 29 even with a 34-50 compact set-up in front. Just don't cross-chain in the big ring.

Proper chain length and 29, still will have enough chain for big-big and no droop in small-small. I had this, 13-29 and 50/34 compact on Moots demo for years w/o any problem.

People forget that chainstay length affects wrap capacity. The perfect chainstay length can provide up to 3T more wrap than the worst case length.

Just because a setup works on one bike, does not mean it will work the same on all.

All you have to do is put the numbers in the rigorous chain length formula.

The upper pulley on the RD may also not clear the largest cog, depending on the frame's RD hanger length. Medium or long cage RDs and the 2009+ 11 speed short cage RDs have a greater range of travel on the "B" screw mechanism, to produce more clearance.

I've been too busy building my retirement home to visit the forum. Sunday is the only day when I get to rest a little.

The good news is my house and workshop are now roughed-in and ready for shingles. We've made good progress since January 27, when we first broke ground.

Hope you're doing well.

Dave, you lucky dog. The building on the left must be the bike workshop...

Until I get a knee replacement, maybe two, my cycling days are over. I'm going to the orthopedic surgeon today to get my right knee looked at. It's probably just a year behind the other one in wearing out. The 1800 square foot shop may get used for hot rod building.
