I have always wondered what that small black set screw is for, anyone?

it's a direct bolt on for a flux capacitor

Exactly. That's why I got them. I need to hook up my transmorgrifryer and needed those screws. Funny, only place you can find em. With the gyroplex and camcussion retorts in place, it drops nicely into my seat tube exponentially.

Way better than ceramics.

Ditto here. As best I can tell it serves absolutely no purpose at all. Can't work as a "pad low and need to be changed" warning, doesn't fasten anything.

I bet if you remove them the whole bike falls apart.

Shimano calls them "tire guides."

Yup, if you look at the angle of the head of the screw and how it perfectly matches the angle of the 'winged' guide, you can see then how it would help guide the tire into the gap between the brakes without adding a lot more mass or weight to the pad holder.

Wow, all that said, maybe I should have charged much more for these highly-engineered beauties! :D
