Asides from pics, you might want to include a better description of the bike (condition, mileage if known, etc). Also, I assume it's a 7400 group, but unclear from your post. Ditto on the wheelset. Are they original Mavic hoops laced to D/A hubs or something more modern? Ditto on including a price if you expect this to sell.

Additional feedback:

It would also help to know if this is an actual team bike or just a Merckx with the Motorola paint scheme. If it is an actual team bike, who did it belong to? Also, does it have its build tag? Many of the actual team bikes had geometry specific to the rider.

To back up the other comments, price and pics will go a long way to getting you a "feel".

Based on what was just said about new steel in the thread about RWHowe's new Bedford (http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=88217&highlight=Bedford), I doubt it's worth much more than $110. As a gesture of friendliness, I'd do $110 AND cover shipping plus PayPal fees!

Still no price.

For what its worth, Robert emailed me pics of the bike a few weeks back from the original seller (he did not have it in his possession yet). The frame looks to be on decent shape. I don't believe it to be an actual team bike.

There is nothing wrong with flipping a bike, especially if you put a little love into it before the sale—which it appears he did (wraps, housings, etc...).

I just think if you are going to do it on this forum, it has to come with a price tag. When it comes to bikes, people here are pretty market savvy. A fair price will catch a fair sale. Bids are for the bay.

an asking price will get you serious offers, no asking price gets a bunch of people wanting to know the price!

I just sold a 53cm corsa extra with 8 speed DA that had been recently overhauled. It wasn't in Motorola colors, but I was happy to get $1100 in this market.

It's ridiculous not to post an asking price! Especially if you "threaten" to put it on flea-bay...heck, if it's too high I can guarantee this forum will tell you so! If it's too low then you just sold a bike inrecord time, made a few dollars and avoided about 7% in ebay and paypal fees.

If it goes to the Bay then you are going to be required to come up with an asking price, a reserve price or a buy-it-now price, cause we all know you aint letting this go for $100 bucks (which can happen if you don't have a reserve on e-bay)! (will it, probably not. Can it, absolutely possible)

So just pony up the brainpower, do 15 mins worth of research, come up with a fair starting price and stop dickering around - even though it does make for some amusing posts and bidding :)

Yeesh - I hate it when no price is asked. Do you really expect us to offer you a fair price? We ARE going to low ball you dude (you and ANYONE else that tries to play this game).

maximus

He has done plenty of research.

Before this listing was made, I created a WTB ad for a Merckx frame. Robert responded with this bike.

What followed was some back and forth with me asking for a price multiple times and him sending me links to hopeful eBay BIN prices, as well as other forum members opinions on what it was worth. It doesn't help that I have a good idea of what he paid for it.

I personally have no interest in playing into the price fishing. No hard feelings, but I really don't think this bike has a place on this forum unless you are willing to post a price. There are other venues for this sort of sale.

In almost all of the other forums I visit, cycling or otherwise, a price must be specified in order to post in the classified section.

Auctions are for the 'Bay or Sotheby's.

I do not believe this is a real Team Merckx based on the geometry (usually the customs had odder than that and EM almost always rec'd a longer top tube. I don't see a number hanger or evidence of a rider name). I'd ned a lot more evidence (serial number, better photos, email confirmation of provenance) before I called this a non-replica.

Also...there was a real Team Merckx on ebay that failed to sell for 1700 (which is sad) recently. I was offered 2500 for my FF/F, but it's Reynolds 753 and confirmed as Bauer's.

Aaron is correct. This isn't an actual Team bike. It doesn't have a number hanger and it has a pump peg on the back of the headtube (which the team bikes didn't have).

However, it does look pretty cool in the pics. It looks like one of those bikes that you would want to stand on the climbs instead of sit.

I would take comfort in the fact that very few people would try to fake a team bike that belonged to Olaf. :)

There are a few traits that I've seen on the bikes. Almost all of them have a number hanger under the top tube (although EM put a lot of number hangers on non-team bikes). Other than that, I would look for remnants of team markings on the frameset.

Also, you should post pics of it in a separate thread.

I think, and could be wrong, that SOME Team bikes (maybe the car hangers or trainers?) lacked the number hanger and had a pump peg, but that definitely leads one to the not a team conclusion. Even if a team, it's likely a less interesting one.

Jet - I think I gave you the contact info I used at Merckx...they did get back to me. Maybe a follow up email?

Another strategy might be to try emailing Gita and he might look into it for you. They'd probably be more likely to respond to Gita than to you and me. I also bet they have a LOT of these requests and have a tough time looking at them all.

I recently purchased a former Motorola race bike and wanted some sort of info on its build from the Merckx factory and I can tell you from first hand experience, those people are awful people. Down right rude (after waiting a month with no email response I called and they slammed the phone down) and insensitive. After getting nowhere I contacted Gita, who helped me with about the nicest customer service anyone could ask for. Email them for sure.

Yes and moreover Eddy is not running the business anymore.

He sold the business, more than just not running it. Eddy realized that to be competitve, manufacturing had to move to Asia, Pinarello, DeRosa, Colnago and most others have discovered this. I think that was something Eddy could not do, Axel wasn't interested so he sold.

He is a 'consultant' and face behind the name but that's all.

Maybe they're upset cuz all they do now is answer the phone and unpack frames made in China and Taiwan?
