I'm assuming the next few days will bring the annual VeloNews.com April Fool's web site bonanza. That is, unless their purchase by Competitor Sports has put the kibosh on such good-natured shenanigans.

I think CyclingNews also does the same thing.

I remember several years ago VN had their story about the new HED "Bastogne" wheels that were literally made out of stone. Looked like Fred Flintstone's idea of a wheel! :D

Anybody else have favorite prank stories from years past?

Better yet, shall we prognosticate a bit on what they might offer this year? God knows there's enough going on the in the pro peloton tp provide some story fodder! :p

Who did the story on Contador's injured Pistolero finger? He's was gonna be out for the season because of his trigger finger injury. That was pretty good.

It not that good but every year on April Fools I put out a few empty boxes of Dunkin Doughnuts at my office. It funny to see how many people fall for it over and over.

That's a good one. I might steal your idea this year.

From Cyclingnews.com:

Tech: HED launches descending special

HED Stalingrad wheels

Wheelmaker HED has announced a new pair of wheels that represents a radical departure for the aerodynamic and lightweight specialist.

Following on from HED's Bastogne wheels, announced a few weeks ago, the Stalingrad wheels continue the theme of toughness in battle, but in a very different vein. The battlefield here is the mountain descents of the Alps and Dolomites and to help speed you to the bottom, the HED Stalingrad is the world's first cast iron wheel.

"Ever wish you could soar down a mountain like Paolo (Il Falco) Salvodelli?" asks HED. "Are your descents as slow as Beloki's and equally as frightful? Well fear not. Adhering to his philosophy of "optimal wheel choice tailored for the factors inherent to each particular race" Steve Hed has once again forged ahead in developing a revolutionary new approach to wheel design. The Stalingrad."

Forged from iron smelted from finest Minnesota ore, each Stalingrad weighs almost 47 lbs, allowing you to instantly add as much weight to your bike as if you'd eaten several thousand Big Mac Happy Meals and spent six months on the couch. "You'll descend like a Russian submarine" says HED. "And when riders hear you rumble up behind them - demanding their surrender - you'll surely hear them mutter "... get the hell out of the way, this guy is nuts...!"

Our April Fool's joke is the weather forecast. What we don't need is more snow, but it sound like that's what's coming. I can't believe it. :crap:

Dave please tell me that the forecast for a foot of snow here tomorrow is also a prank!

We already discussed that theory here at the office . . . . and came to the conclusion that if it IS an April Fool's joke, it's a good one and must have originated with someone at the weather service. There's no way al lthe TV stations, radio stations, newspapers, etc, could all keep it together.

Yep. That's where I got it. The OP had requested 'favorite prank stories from years past'.

I also remember one , I believe also from VN, that had the rider sitting mostly upright, steering with a length of twine attached at each end to the bar-ends and held between the teeth,, while using both hands/arms to press down on the knees. This was heralded as a new 'climbing technique'. Once again, this came out on the April 1 issue.
