Ok, this may have come from the Dutchman Dr. Leinders, but Wilfried Nelissen claimed that after doing these pre-season, just before racing started he was tested and claimed to be about 25% stronger then the previous year. This coming from a guy who could sometimes beat Cippo when the Lion was at his best. Unfortunately his career was cut short by a nasty 60 kph crash into a wooden post at Ghent-Wevelgem that pretty much blew apart his right leg.

Jerk approved? If not, take it up with the Bulldog! :p

*Ride together with a partner, side by side at 18 mph.
*You then sprint flat out until you blow up (all the while your partner keeps riding at 18 mph).
*When your partner catches you, ride along side him (not behind) at 18 mph.
*When you recover to a certain heart rate, sprint flat out again.
*Do this 10x's per session. Not every day, but often.

Gotta love that BigBill, most excellent but what do I know!?!
I'll throw in my version of this "partner" training for race speed work.
With partner in tow throw down a 1 miles race speed effort and than drop back to draft. Your "pal" will wind up and hold your top speed for no more than .5 mile...he drops back and than you have to come around and nail it for 1 mile. This repeats until you can no longer come around. *Do this on a fairly flat or low roller area.

That's what I used to put the finishing touches on my training for two Southern PAC tours.
