i plan on running a sram setup with a campy wheel/cassette. mostly cuz i already have the gear and i want to use my 13/29 cassette (i rarely use my 11 or 12 cogs). am i correct in understanding that the shiftmate #1 is what i need?
how well do these things work really?

I use Campy shifters & derailers with Shimano wheels, works perfect.

I haven't used one with SRAM/Campy, but I've used a shiftmate on my touring bike (Campy shifters, XT rear derailleur, and Shimano-compatible wheels) and it also worked perfectly.

I tried to use all Campy with a shimano cassette and the jtek shiftmate. I could never get it to work as smoothly as I like so I just abandoned it. Hopefully you have better results.

The one I set up and used briefly worked fine. I needed a really long cable to make the wrap around the pulley.

I'm using a jtek with shimano components and campy wheel/ cassette. Properly set up I can't tell it is there, works perfectly. Can't remember the model, but I think I still have the instructions and can let you know if need be.

I've been running campy shifters with shimano cassette for several months now on my winter / commuter bike. works perfectly & i don't even know it's there. for me the hassle was installation. it's a PITA wrapping the cable around the little cam & get it all set up correctly. once set up ...... no issues whatsoever. i also needed a really long cable as one other poster mentioned. i forget what model i use but i think it's the #1.

May we assume this is using a Jtek?

I tried one of these last year. After 5 hours of reading everything I could and screwing around with it, I gave up.
Shimano SL7900 10speed to Campy Centaur cassette 13X29.
I could get it to shift fine through the top 5 and then the bottom 5 didn't work or the other way around.
Overall a fussy, dissatisfying experience.
