How can this saddle fetch such a high price?

I know Flite Ti are classic and this may be a vintage (circa '91) in great shape. Are there other reasons why it would, in this case, fetch such $$??

Dang... I'm not sure. I only know that I've gone through close to a dozen of those things over the years. Of course they were all purchased new, in the 90's from $59 to $99.

You mean I traded my NOS one identical to that one for scuffed up Arione...?? :D

Yeah, especially since they are selling the re-issue ones now, I think.

pretty crazy i agree. the shape looks similar enough to other brands, that i would try something else before i sprung for one at this price.

I think the problem is we actually ride the bikes we assemble, so it is hard for us to understand.

I suppose if you're restoring a museum piece, you'd want the yellow "flite" lettering, the red logo and the 90's leather (which to me looks smoother and shinier than the reissue's cover). I also think the the reissue's padding feels a bit different, but I doubt I'd notice the difference if I was riding.

Just think about how much it would have fetched if it had included the original box.

Tom

I had several of those and they worked really well for me.. the new ones don't work at all for me.. I wouldn't pay that price for one, I instead went through a bunch of saddles till I found something else that was OK, but I can understand someone wanting to stock up on the old design.

I ride flite ti's, and really like them. However last year Selle italia re-released them, $99 at excel for a new one: http://www.excelsports.com/main.asp?page=8&description=Flite+Titanium+1990+Saddle&vendorCode=SELLE&major=1&minor=18

I like 'em too.

I noticed the ebay auction had a question about the date code on the saddle,
leading me to believe the bidder was possibly doing a restoration, and
wanted a 20 year old new saddle, not a new new saddle.

The new so called "1990 replica" versions are different than the originals, Selle Italia
changed the rails, they are now more parallel with the top, not on an
angle like the old ones. The new one's have quite a bit more stack too,
raising the saddle height about 8mm's. It's noticeable how much more
"kink" the new rails have, and more is exposed below the edge of the
leather. New one on the bottom photo, original on top.

PBK has the re-released flite for I think 79.00. Not sure what the difference if any there is between a NOS flite and a the re-released flite? Anyone know? Pez?

Whoops...see Grants post above!
