When shifting from a 42 tooth to a 52 tooth ring, does anyone have experience when shifting from the 42 to a 52 when the 52 is a 52/39. I can see how the opposite might not work so good....shifting from 39 to a 52 on a ring designed for 52/42, but thought going from 42 to 52 on a 39/52 might shift OK. I'm thinking about using a 52 on a 30-42-52 triple when my 52 is a 39/52. Got some rings and got some arms, putting a Centaur based triple together. Thanks

Sounds like the Ralph's 52 is designed for a 52/39 combination and he wants to know if anybody has used a 52 (designed to be matched with a 39) with a 42.

Both my bikes are Campy equipped doubles. Shifting from 39 to 53 is no problem.

As far as triples, can't comment.

I would think long and hard before switching to a triple. With the great double options available, I would encourage you to try a triple before committing. Very hard to find the right rhythm (cadence, I mean) when you ride a triple on the road.

I've sold off my triple cranks, but keep enough parts to put one together for that occasional trip to the mountains. Sometimes, on those long all morning climbs, a 34-29 doesn't cut it for this old man. I know I can buy a 12-32 IRD cassette, to use with a 34-50, but they cost more than a triple crank. When you need some low gears, with a 1-1 or lower ratio, I still like a triple, even though I don't need one very often. I'm handy at changing stuff around. Keep some precut chains for use with triple, etc.

The whole matched ring thing is vastly overplayed. You want to use a 52t on a triple(52/42) when the 52t came from a double(52/39)? Just put it on and go ride.

Once upon a time rings weren't 'matched' at all and they shifted just fine. Yours will too, particularly with ERGO.

That was in the days of friction shifting, STI really likes it's magic rings,
specially with silly short chain stays and a triple up front.

Ergo front shifting is ye olde Suntour power ratchet, it'll shift anything.

So the gent with a Campagnolo triple has STI? 'Matched' rings, even with STI and sram is overplayed...

Sorry.
The post ride 4lb burrito took longer than expected.

In other news, I really like chipotle salsa with a bit of lime zing.
