I had to vote no, but I have to qualify it by saying that I have been measured at 6 ft a couple of times in my youth. But more often five eleven and 3/4 and probably lost most of the 3/4 by now.

I'm 6'5''......but....
there's sooo much height around here I would probably be the
starting "point guard" if the board had a roundball team!!

And just a thought...people have been remarking that I've grown
recently!!....I think my posture is improved from doing those "plank-exercises"
....which is yoga I think?
I like the "planks" where you hold for a count of 10...then butt up to 10..
then repeat for as many as you can stand!! good fun!! :)

So, 57% of responders have indicated that they are over 6 feet tall. For sake of simplicity, I will assume that the majority of our forum responders are male and reside in the United States. No offense to our female and non US residents (you should be used to Ameri-centrism, anyway). A quick Google search reveals that the 75th percentile for United States males is 182 cm (just slightly under 6 feet). So, this would seem to be contradictory to the common assumption that cycling is a sport best suited to smaller people. Bicycle manufacturers take note. Build more large frames!

The other analysis is, of course, that we large people just hang around on the Serotta forum taking polls and discussing how insensitive we were in our remarks about someone's bike. Poseurs!

Checking in at 6'4.

Once upon a time I was 6 ft 3 in, but I am shrinking and am now about 6 ft 2.5 in. Hopefully the shrinkage will not accelerate from its glacial pace. :)

Once every 4 or 5 trips the doc says 5' 8.5"--gotta get some more thor-lo socks. The wife is actually 6 feet tall, but unless I'm due for a mid-forties growth spurt and an all-around increase in respectability, she'll always be looking down on me.

"A quick Google search reveals that the 75th percentile for United States males is 182 cm (just slightly under 6 feet)."

To head off the PC howls, all I'm saying is that all surveys show that tall people tend to be paid more, at least in the U.S., the key word being "tend." Serotta owners are highly likely to be more successful than the average U.S. male in order to be able (and willing) to afford the price of admission. Serotta owners are probably also older than 35 (I'm guessing) and not trying to win top level races, on average, so the short bias when thinking of cyclists is mostly off the table.

Therefore the tilt to taller people in this poll should not be very surprising. The tilt to REALLY tall people may be more interesting, although the conjunction of custom frame sizing and selection bias (tall people may be more likely to answer) may be part of the answer.

Boy, if I ever need to sell my bike I'm in the wrong crowd. I got a 53ish.

Centaur,

That's a pretty good hypothesis. My working hypothesis was that people who are tall are more likely to click on a thread entitled, "How many people are over 6 feet tall?" I don't think that I would have clicked on a thread asking, "How many people are under 5'10?"(closer to 50th percentile).

Anecdotally, I virtually never see bikes that would fit me offered for sale. Of course, I have converted to the dreaded "french fit". Scary to think that in college and med school, I rode a 56 and 57 frameset. When mileage and flexibility decreased due to the demands of residency, frame size grew to a gargantuan 60 cm!. Now, post accident and micro discectomy, frame size is now a truly gargantuan 64 and 65! So, ergott, either a great deal of people are selling frames way too small for them or there truly are more small and average size people riding.

I still maintain my belief that there is a distribution of height amongst cyclists that is disproportionate to statistical norms for the country. My hypothesis for this is that the taller folks are drawn to more traditional sports such as basketball and football where their large size is more of an advantage than a liability. Once indoctrinated into the "jock" mentality, there is little chance of them converting to any sport where is it a virtual requirement to wear that pansy-arsed spandex. Obviously, there are glaring exceptions to this (BigMac comes to mind), but it may well hold true.

Anyway, perhaps we should have some more polls to investigate these hypotheses in more depth.

Well, 5'5" and that's on a good day. I don't mind a date with a tall guy though, makes me look sorta petite. :p :p Better yet, I like sucking wheel behind the big guys, I tuck in reallllllllly tight; ya might not even know I'm there. :D

Napoleon a great general? Great enough to have a syndrome for small people with short fuses and bad attitudes named after him.

A very timely reference.
