so i was going to order from pbk
but(my favorite bike shop) 66fixed has conti 4000 s for $50 only a little more than pbk and i like them a lot
so i am thinking a conti 4000 in front and a slightly heavier tire in back
( gatorskin) i am all ears to recommendations and would appreciate advise on tires for my new fixie
cheers

I love Gatorskins. You might as well get two and then you can switch them back and forth to even out the wear.

Unless you're skidding like crazy you don't need anything different than any other bike.

28mm panaracer pasela for durability and lack of flats.

23mm Vittoria Evo CX for road-feel and fun rides.

Well they are my choices.

michelin krylion 700x25. Think armor plated pro-race.

I've had paselas on my fuji track commuter for a few years now, I can't wear them out.

support the local guy fixed, you get tires instantly and the shop gets business, win win.

gp4000s are on par with the better training tires, besides little subtleties, i would run a set of them with no reservations.

Butch.

You're too old to for skid competitions.

Less is more when it comes to pressure.

Buy the GP4000.

I like them lots. 95% of Pro 3s. Less flats.

Buy 25s and love them.

I'm not fat.

I love 25s.

I ride 23s because my ego is stupid.

I'm with this all the way down the line. Skidz are for kids and 'tards. I use Veloflex Pave on my fixed as I'm vain, they come in tanwall, and they're just the best road feeling and supple tyres. Get the GP4000s which are pretty damn good.

I've got a pair of Gatorskins on my Trek, and GP4000S on my Serotta.

Both are fantastic tires. I'd go with the Gatorskins if you're looking for puncture resistance above all else.

Can't go wrong either way though.

I'm slightly vain and think I'm worth the PR3 x 25 I ride. You are to (worth it), and get something you like riding, not because it wears like iron.

On my fixed gear I want:
- Bulletproof. A flat on a fixed gear can get ugly.
- Comfy.

Grippy cornering is way down the list.

I've been using Rivendell Ruffy Tuffy's for a couple of sets. Real happy
with them. They don't flat and they ride well for a kevlar belted tire.

Gatorskins would be good, too. I'd go with a 25c or bigger.

Hey, flats happen even on a fixie. Grippy cornering is something I love. I also like comfy. I ride with more rubber on in the winter, but in dry weather, it's Vittoria EVO CX.

Fixed,

Go with something you like. You're in the sun. Find a comfy spot to sit and change a flat at your leisure.

4000s are not only faster than Gators, but they are also more durable.

I've had better luck with the 4000's and have them on all my current bikes.

I might go with a 25 width on a fixie.

unless you are doing skids, keep the front and rear tires the same. i'd suggest your original thoughts....continental 4000's, but go front and rear.

without a doubt, unless your racing on a smooth velodrome, go with 25 mm. that small bit of compliance makes a world of difference in the ride over anything more than 5 miles!!!! just don't put too much pressure in them and ride them rock hard...no need. these are fast and comfortable and have a ton of grip (as you know).

i weigh 175, and ride these on my fixed motobecane conversion, and my nagasawa fixed bike for training.

racing i've been running victoria tubulars.

hope this helps!!!

I'm not "pushing" any brand but we should remember that technology marches on and experience 10 years ago with brand "A" may be meaningless in regard to their current tires.

I use the 25's on my winter bike. Lots of rubber, ride nice, but boy they are heavy.

If you're going to skid, a cheap urban/commuter tire in the back - Vittoria Randonneur in 28[rando 25 is just craptacular], Rib-mo, Pasela all work great.

If not, I'd like to vote for the Rivendell Roll-y-Poly (http://www.rivbike.com/products/show/roll-y-pol-y-700-x-27-kevlar/10-034) front & rear. They should fit on the Soma, though I cant remember if the fork's ultra tight.
