I don't like instant coffee and I'm not a fan of Starbucks' Via.
I have a travel French Press, but I prefer espresso.
How about espresso makers for travelling - what are my options?
Thanks.

Not exactly espresso to a T, but has a Moka pot and small hot plate crossed your mind?

Handpresso... like a Lezyne but better.
You already have the muscle memory for it.

I have a Moka pot (or 2) and don't even need a hot plate, 'cuz the places we are staying have small kitchens-so that's a pretty good idea.

You could probably get a patent on a bike pump espresso maker-just the thing for cross country self supported bike trips...

Sweetmaria's gave it a good review. They know coffee. That's where I get my fresh green beans from.

Thanks. For the price of the Aeropress, it seems like I can't go wrong.

My favorite part of the Aeropress, aside from the coffee, is the grounds get compressed into a little hockey puck of goodness. Give it a good whack to knock the grounds out into a trash/compost can and it's more or less clean. It's much easier to use and clean up than a french press.

Another rec. for the Aeropress. I use it to make regular coffee, not espresso. Works great.

AEROPRESS ISN'T ESPRESSO. It's coffee.
For on the go espresso, check out the Mypressi Twist.

These are good if you do it right, as in really good. To make a killer Vietnamese coffee add sweetened condensed milk and ice. Yum.

Just a Q, but isn't the Aeropress like a French Press with a paper filter instead of a steel mesh one?

You also need to use coarsely ground coffee or it will get clogged.

THAT is cool. Lotsa CO2 cartridges though - which you can't take on airplanes - serious limit on practicality.

Yup, looking for the morning jolt to get up and go.
Shino's suggestion sounds great after a morning run/ride in 95 degree weather.

It's a great pick me up - deadly combo of caffeine and sugar. If there are any vietnamese restaurants near you you should check it out - everyone I've ever been in serves it.

But the aeropress paper filter allows you to use a much finer grind than you can with a french press, thus the ability to make an OK shot of espresso.

Great product! Very simple, nothing to break or malfunction. The coffee is less bitter than from a mocha pot.
I have used it on bike trips and used hot tap water and still had a great cup of joe!!

+100 on the aeropress. it's great. have been using one for 4 years or so now. easy to take on trips or whatever. makes a great cup of coffee. less messy than a french press for sure.

aeropress. doesn't do true espresso, but definitely a strong italian coffee, which honestly what a moka pot is as well. the brew process is much cleaner and uniform then a french press or moka pot. also less harsh.

I orginally purchased mine for camping, but it has become my everyday cup of joe. Very durable and simple--no pumps, grinders or complex seals that break or leak.
Try using water at different temperatures for different tasting coffee. The recomended 180' water makes a very good shot with "creme" on top. Water at 160' produces a smoother, less dense shot with little or no creme.
The aeropress is inexpensive and should not be compared to a $1000+ expresso machine. For the money, I think you will be hard pressed to find a better expresso/coffee maker.
I showed my aeropress to my local roaster and they loved it. They use brewed coffee instead of water and make a very caffinated beverage!
