View Full Version : All-Time WORST cycling fashion faux pas? . . .

BumbleBeeDave

I got my new BICYCLING magaznie a couple of days ago and I thought at first that our very own flydhest has made the cover! . . . Handsome African American man powering up a hill on a really nice bike. But then I realized there was NO way THAT could be fly-man, because fly-man has impeccable taste (obviously--look what message board he hangs out on!), does not own a Scott bike that I know of, and would never, EVER wear . . .

WHITE. SHORTS.

So that question out of the way, I began to wonder what could have posessed this otherwise intelligent looking guy to wear . . . WHITE. SHORTS.? Doesn't he know that sooner or later going up that hill, he's going to start sweating, and his ride-mates are going to be treated to a, uh, ahem, "show?"

So THEN I began thinking what could POSSIBLY be worse the . . . WHITE. SHORTS.? And, of course, I knew what to do. Ask my forum buddies.

So vote early and often! Add your own nominations!

Here's mine . . . I'd post a poll, but I can't figure out how!

1) WHITE. SHORTS.

2) The Pope's "holey" shorts.

3) Mismatched jersey and shorts.

4) Black socks.

5) Anything that Bumblebee Dave wears.

BTW, I noticed black Pearl Izumi socks that were black yesterday at the LBS. Didn't think they were that bad looking. I like gray though.

BICYCLING usually has more than it's share of fluff, but did you see their article on "the toughest man in cycling?" - Davis Phinney. The picture of the '88 crash looks painful. I thought it would be an interesting read before Open House. :)

back to the topic at hand. first of all bumblebee man, white shorts are fast, and tough and the best if you are fast enough and lean enough to pull them off. best shorts ever are giordana tenax bibs in white. super hardcore muscle-compression bibs that just feel fast on, and really work at massaging the muscles and postioning things so pedalling hard just feels right....anyway, white is tough and white is fast and white shorts are euro and pro and match white shoes and white bar tape which is also pro. of course they look stupid on a guy going 15mph with a 90mm stem and black dress socks and hairy legs....but that guy looks stupid in anything.

jerk
(where is the jerk's picture of mario cippolini in the best young rider jersey complete with white shorts smoking a camel and getting yelled at by ferretti? the jerk is pretty sure he posted it on some incarnation of this forum....)

1: bibs on the outside. or bibs with no shirt at all.
2. shorts (non bib) where there is a gap between the shorts and jersey in back.
3. jerseys that are so long that the pockets hang down.
4. helmets tipped back on the head.

The only problem is if you're dark-haired, like me, white shorts tend to show a bit too much information.

What is a bigger question: Why does everybody wear black shorts? Just because?

C'mon. Put a little color into your cycling life. Buy colored shorts. If nothing else, a blue, red, yellow, green or pink butt is easier for drivers to see. Like this ... :butt:

And none of this nonsense about "they get too dirty." That's what the washing machine is for. And if you don't wash your shorts after every ride, then you are the biggest cycling fashion faux pas.

Hmmm, I must be a fashion "don't" because all I wear are black socks. I agree with Jerk that if you can pull of white then by all means, have at it! White is fast and white, imho, is cool for those that fit the jerks description above.

About 13 years ago the Carrera team had denim colored shorts. Some people didn't like them, but I thought they were cool. I went the GP Gippengen in Switzerland and saw Stephen Roche and Ralf Sorensen riding with those things and thought that they were the first cool colored shorts.

The ugliest ones IMHO were the Castorama shorts from about 1990 or sometime around then.

But maybe the worst ever were some worn by a forgettable Swiss team called Pneuhaus Frank or something like that (it is a small chain of car tire shops in Switzerland) and they had some hideous light blue with some sort of gridwork patchwork on them. Ralf Jaermann was on that team.

The zebra pants of Cipollini were also ugly, but he made them cool. Nobody else could have except him.

I heard that those Ummagummas were horrible and they had to recall them and take them off the market or something. Really bad from what I recall.
