i see this sticker a lot, and have heard "airplane tubing" or similar thrown around a lot, what exactly does this mean?

Just Columbus's name for one of their aluminum tubesets.

Altec and Altec2 were others.

generally airplane tubing is 4130 cro-mo

airplanes need[ed] many of the same tubing characteristics as bicycles do- a tubing that is stiff, light, and strong.
