Thank you all for your suggestions on how to eliminate the creak on my legend. All great suggestions, but the winner is......the honorable David Kirk, who suggested using a longer seatpost.

The ever helpful William came through the next day with, and I'm not making this up, a Ritchey 440. I'm not sure what kind of a monster needs a 440 mm seatpost, but our boy William produced it in less then 12 hours. I rode 101 miles on Sunday and not a creak, peep, or even a whimper. (OK, I wimpered a little around 95 miles, but the bike was silent).

So, the moral of the story is: if you have a sloping top tube, it may not be enough to just clear the minimum insertion line. It also may not be enough for the post to clear the bottom of the juncture between the seat stays and the top tube. Make sure that bad boy goes down a bit more. I just ordered a 350, which at 100 mm past the 250 that was making the noise, should be just peachy.
