I’m looking for a clamp-on water bottle adaptor to temporarily install a third bottle off my seat tube (1-1/8 OD) during long rides. I prefer something that is very easy to install and remove so I don’t have to leave it on all the time. Also prefer something that won’t scratch the paint on steel frame (i.e. – prefer plastic over metal bands). I’m also looking for something that is readably available at LBS or for quick shipping.

Has anyone used a cage adaptor that is easy to install and remove? Recommendations are appreciated.

The Twofish stuff is nice:

And King Cage makes a neat adapter for putting a bottle cage on your stem cap. I have not used that though.

+1

I was just eyeing one of these at the shop yesterday-- thinking it would be perfect for Pugsley riding. Ought to work fine for touring, also.

Wow, I had no idea about the King Cage Adapter. Thanks.

I found a picture.

I am happy so far with an aluminum cage & plastic bottle that I bought from Wal-mart. The cage attaches with alum straps that are inside the bottle (check that they are there!)
I think it was either Bell or Schwinn.
Use plastic tape or pieces of inner tube to protect the frame.

It's not pretty, but works ok.

In the past I’ve installed a third bottle cage (for long and hot rides where rest stops couldn’t be counted on) behind the seat tube on my bikes that don’t have seat stays. Unfortunately I misplaced the adaptor I used in the past – plus it was meant to be used as a semi-permanent installation anyway. I was now hoping someone made a cage adaptor that worked on a hinged quick-release clamp system similar to some light-duty seat-post racks – something that can be installed or taken off in a few seconds. Or perhaps with a wing nut for no-tools on-off. Thus far I’ve found nothing like that.

Thanks Joe,

The Two Fish Quick Cage certainly meets the easy and fast on-off requirement. However, some of the reviews I read after your post suggest adequate friction can be a problem at times, and in my application having it slip down could cause a problem if it contacted the rear tire so I’m looking for something a little more secure.

The King adaptor looks cool but it doesn’t appear to be something that can be installed and removed quickly and easily – something I plan to do repeatedly based on route, temperature, etc…. The King appears to require readjusting the headset every time it’s installed/removed. Also, I’m not sure the bottle there wouldn’t interfere with my legs when climbing steep grades – I tend to lean forward a lot.

They say that if your headset is already adjusted properly it is just a matter of removing the top cap and replacing with the King, being careful not to overtighten the screw. Is there more to it than that because not being mechanically inclined I was hoping to do it myself?

I wonder if this stem mount makes the bike any more dangerous in case of a wreck?
