disclaimer: this is all stolen from another biking forum i look at, but i think its relevant information here. apparently there are a fairly high rate of failure of older 6700 chains, the following images are of failed 6700 chains, some of which have fairly low mileage, and some of which, have ruined people's days. just a PSA, if you're running a shimano ultegra chain, you may want to check it out.

(glad i run campy!! )

Edit: chain mixup.

What do you mean by "older 6700"? Were they revised?

no idea, just reiterating what i've heard, i didnt look too far into it at all honestly, since i dont use these chains, but this anecdotal evidence alone would be cause enough for me to go take a look at my chain if i had any of these shimano chains with the slits in the plates like this.

Those may be some of the nastiest chains I've ever seen. Where are these guys riding and why aren't they doing at leasy a cursory job of cleaning their stuff? This isn't a Shimano problem, this is a drivetrain cleanliness issue. These failures are spectacular, but hardly noteworthy or indicative of a wholesale issue with Shimano.

FWIW, the worst parts failure I've ever experienced was having the bolt that holds the hirth joint together fail on a Campy Chorus carbon UT crank. It just totally sheared and came apart. Happened while I was out of the saddle and going up a slight hill. Pretty much the same effect as having your chain fail.

Disclaimer: I ride SRAM. :)

My thoughts exactly!

 Is it bad that I actually copied saved the, TCR with broken chain, pic to Aperature in order to enlarge it & search for hairline cracks in those chain/seat stays?

I agree with other forum comments, these owners need to learn the benefits of a having a properly/regularly degreased/re-lubed drivetrain.

meh, it wouldnt be unheard of for my chain to look like that after a longish ride in the rainy muck. i dont know about you, but when its wet out and the road is full of dirt, grime and silt, this happens.

What, you guys don't put on a new chain after every ride? This should not even be an issue.

Thanks for posting, even though I don't think I have one of these chains.

i agree, even a dirty chain shouldnt fail this way. it's odd.

i mainly use campy chains, but this might help someone prevent a serious problem.

and here I was thinking I didn't need to splurge on DA chains anymore

Plate an Ultegra and get DA...

Use 5700 chains, they work great and are cheaper. I have installed probably 200 shimano 7900/6700/5700 chains and haven't seen any of this.

Maybe the chains had 20,000 miles on them, never cleaned or lubed?

This would never had happened, if he had cleaned and lubricated his chain properly (http://www.sheldonbrown.com/chainclean.html).

Jeez I post a simple question and we have two chain related threads. That must be a forum record for one day. I have always just bought what was available at the LBS and used it. I've never had a chain failure (knock on the wood) and I'm not mister maintenance in the chain department but I am now proud to say I've never let a chain get quite that cruddy. As my Dad use to say " An ounce of prevention for a pound of cure."
