My resting rate is 65 to 70

My max is around the 195 range.

I find that as I get older, my resting HR is getting higher but i'm not losing the top end.

I think this is odd. I think I should be losing the top end but keeping the resting HR?

When I was 25 years younger and a runner, resting was 35..yep, 35. USN quack wanted to give me a pacemaker.

Now resting about 55, max 180 or so. just turned .6 offa a century.

I think the formula for max HR is 220-age. For me it would be 166. Close enough. I'm way average.

Caveat: it's been 2 years since I've measured either but the last time I did my resting was 37 and my max was 185. I'm 57. I'm guessing the resting is higher and the max is lower now.

As an aside, I had surgery a few years ago to clean up some bone chips in my shoulder. My wife was waiting in the lobby of the hospital for me and got a page saying to come to the front desk. When she showed up they said (idiots!) "there's a problem" - she thought I'd died on the operating table. Turns out my heart rate was in the mid-30's and they thought my heart was going to stop - this was after I'd explicitly told them I had a low resting heart rate. She told them no biggie and I was fine. The worst part was that when I came to they wouldn't give me any pain meds until my heart rate was 50 or more. I was doing situps in bed trying to raise it.

Max. 190 (highest I've seen recently on the rowing machine - haven't been up above 180 on the bike in a while). I seem to be able to hang at about 165-170 for an hour or so pretty comfortably.

At 37 and in my best rowing shape, resting was 42 and max was 210.
According to my cardiologist, what that means is I have a "fluttery" heart. He felt that the max. number isn't that indicative of ability, but the low resting number was a good indicator of heart capacity.

I'll add that there are no bragging rights to having a low resting heart rate or a high max heart rate. Although both values respond to training, they're only relevant measured against yourself and are for the most part determined by genetics. I ride with a guy whose heart rate goes to 185 brushing his teeth but when he's in shape he'll flat out kill me. We'll be riding along and my heart rate will be 165 and I'm suffering and he's at 180 and feeling fine.

yes, this is all very true, I am just getting back into using the hrm, and wanted to see what kind of range was out there. i think currently my resting hr is about 153 and max is around 190.

Agreed on this. There's a guy I ride with occasionally. I can 'know' what his heart rate is at any given time just by adding 40 beats to what mine is. He's roughly the same age as me and also a former racer. We are doing roughly the same work, but his heart rate is just that much higher.

Exactly...it's all relative. And that 220-age thing is next to worthless. All it does is bisect the proverbial bell-shaped curve.

Mine was 68 when I was 16 and getting started as a cyclist (tested at the doctor's office as part of a physical my mom made me get). As a junior racer it dipped into the low 50's, but usually hung around 55. During my college bodybuilding phase It was 56. These days, at age 42, it's 46, an all time low.

Max used to be well above 190. During one memorable sprint workout with the UCLA cycling team, I clocked 206. It's been a while since I've seen the high side of 180 on the bike, but doing VO2 max intervals on the stepmill I can hit up to 185.

Interesting how the body changes with the years.

Also as an aside, one of the byproducts of being a serious (or semi-serious) cyclist is you're in touch with this stuff. A riding buddy took himself to the doctor because he felt out of breath and his HR was elevated. Doc said his color was fine, BP was tolerable, and his HR of 72 is normal range. My buddy said "Not for me." He made a pest of himself till the doc relented and did more tests. Turned out he had a collapsed lung.

At 35:

Resting 46-53

Max on a bike 196

discomfort threshold was 171-175 range

Highest in a treadmill stress-echo test 189, I was pegged for 30 seconds did not go any higher

I'm 44 now stopped measuring everything in 2006 - I go for duration of rides and perceived effort levels.

Resting is 47. That was always funny when would go in to the Dr. office. When it was the offseason, weighing 240 with that heart rate would make them test me twice. Good times.

Not sure about my max, never tried.

At age 53 my resting is 42 and max on the bike is 174; at least I haven't pushed it beyond that in the last few years. I would guess that if I was running or doing an activity full out that involved something other than just my legs it would be on the other side of 180.

I had a physical back in the '80s and and the nurse measured my pulse at 37. "No way...you're trying to do that" she said. I had to laugh.

I think the more interesting thing is HR comparison at roughly the same effort.

Example: Two guys on a flat, or nearly flat road, riding side-by-side at 15 mph with both guys on the hoods or in the drops, but same position for each. Then bump it up to 17.5 mph for a while until things settle down, then 20 mph.

I'm 56 and my resting HR at my physical last March was 46. I don't use computers on my bikes much so max HR is unknown.

One riding buddy is 6 yrs younger, has a faster resting HR and always has a faster HR when we'd check. Yet he can drop me on a bike pretty easily.

I donno mine either, feels low when I ride. Couldn't be the lack of O2 around here.
