Hey all-- I just scored a nice deal on a "monstercross" bike, but it needs new shoes. Any preferences in 700c x 42c tires (with tubes)? Don't think a 2.1 29er tire will fit, and I'd like to use a tire that will roll fairly well on pavement, but with enough tread that it grips well on dirt...

Thanks, Chris

Hi Chris.
I know the Schwalbe CX tires are nice (quite pricey) but since I have never use them I can't/won't comment on their performance. BUT...
I have used the the Conti CX Race & the CX Speed both in 700X42 wire bead, because they are nice tires for long fire road mileage sessions. Though the Speed is not truly designed to be a used on pavement I think it will probably wear quite well, but the CX Race will not take nicely to pavement mileage

My suggestion for the type of tire that I believe will work best for on and light cross use would be the Continental Country Plus 700x42. Your LBS should be able to get you the wire bead version for about $35-39 ea. Chris You will need to weigh your percentage of dirt to asphalt usage in order to choose the best tire for your needs.

Chris, if you ever want to venture into the hard core Monster CX scene, I wholeheartedly endorse the tire I ran on my M-Cross Single Speed this past season. The Panaracer Fire Cross 700x42

I have a set of IRC Mythos 42c's that I've used for monstercrossing. No complaints.
