Are there any 4-hole shoes currently in production? I've heard of Bont, although their web-site currently does not mention the 4-hole pattern. I've heard DMT may have some, but again, didn't see any on their web site. Suggestions are welcome.

I think I've seen them in a Competitive Cyclist E-mail blast.

Ahh, after a few more searches, I found some lake cx236's for around 200, and some out of stock cx330's for 220. Everything else seems to be a bit more pricy. Also, I see a lot of Louis Garneau shoes that say they are drilled for speedplay but seem only to have the three bolt and spd holes.

D2 makes stock shoes now. Still not cheap--$475--but very nicely made.

Why do you need 4 hole shoes for Speedplay? I've ridden in various models of Specialized shoes with Speedplay pedals for years with no issues at all.

lower stack height. if you use their shims, you're taking away one of the greatest benefits of speedplay pedals IMHO. you're effectively adding about 5 mm to your pedal/cleat interface.

I found them here:

for 199.99. I think that may be the best price out there. The cx236's are 169. Is there much of a difference in performance/comfort with the added kangaroo leather and upgraded inner lining? Not sure...

Those appear to be three holes (not all Lakes are Speedplay drilled, they offer both SPD and 4-hole). Did you contact them about the four hole?

D2 will not make a Speedplay-specific sole. You just use the three-hole adapter plate. The stack height is still quite low, and IMO, the plate protects the carbon sole.

Bontrager RXL's fit Speedplay just fine.

There we are, cx236's for 169.99, and cx330's for 214.99. Shipping's 15 bucks, which already puts the price of the cx236's are close enough to what edencycle's offers, so I may just buy from them, and then not worry about returns, fitting, etc.

Bumping up an old thread here to see about updating the list of Speedplay 4-hole compatible shoes. I've been riding Speedplay pedals for over 20 yrs and never bothered to look into shoes specifically designed for the cleat. Is there a big/noticeable difference?

The current shoe companies I've come across still making these are

Lake
Northwave (w/ some cutting involved & tempting prices right now)
DMT (NOS possibly)
Gaerne (NOS possibly)

Also curious if any of the custom cycling shoe makers accommodate Speedplay cleat configurations and if anyone has experience with them?

Nimbl has this option along with Bont as an option.

From years using sidi 4 hole model back in the day, I’d say there was a noticeable like factor for me compared to adding in the plate. Could be a pea/mattress thing.

I have Lake CX 4 0 somethings….with the 4 hole. I used the 3 hole with the plate for about 5 rides and switched. It is a big enough difference that I bought what I hope is a lifetime supply of the Lake 4 holes in case they ever stop making them.

I am getting on well with a pair of the northwave speedplay specific shoes. the lower stack height is definitely noticeable when a/b -ing against my other three hole shoes with adapter plate/shim.
