Friend has an older Shimano 8 speed cassette and wants to convert the hub to 10 speed. How do I determine if the hub is suitable?

Thanks y'all !

7,8,9,10 cassettes can be used on the same hubs. So if currently using and 8 cassette, then should be able to sub a 10 on the same hub.

im not sure, but i think you need to put a 1mm spacer behind the 10 speed cassette to make it work.

Also, final position cog may need to be a 12 depending on the freehub body.

is required when putting a 9 speed cassette on a newer hub that was made to also accept 10 speed cassette. not the other way around. we need an opinion of a real expert.

If it's 'hyperglide', as in uses a lockring and 8s, yes you can put on a shimano or sram 7/8/9/10s cogset on it.

Only need the spacer(1mm supplied with shimano 10s cogsets) when putting a shimano 10s cogset on these same freehub bodies. Not required when putting 9s sshimano cogset on.

were built to handle 7,8,9,10. When I installed a 9 speed cassette, I needed a spacer near the spokes behind the cassette.

For Mavic hubs and shimano or sram, you did need Mavic' 2mm spacer(same for more modern. Today"s fts-l hub) It's a mavic tall freehub design thing. But for shimano hyperglide freehubs, 1mm only with 10s shimano cogsets,
