Here is my very pathetic, very disorganized, simply awful work place. It looks like this when I'm in the process of building or working on multiple bikes at once.

I am going to do some renovation and upgrades to this area this year and would LOVE to see what you folks have set up for your place.

Need ideas and suggestions from my fellow forumites, please.

fire hazard is what it is. :)

Just curious, how do you get anything done? Or do you insist "you know exactly where everything is"

At first I was going to say "Hell no, you can't see my messy workplace!" but yours looks about like mine.
Now I'll just say "No, thanks." I don't want to have the fire department called on me.

legacysti888
01-11-2011, 05:34 PM
Yeah.. It is a fire hazard. Among other things.. but there are no electrical outlets in these areas.. except the farthest left wall.

I kinda know where things are.. that's the problem.. tried to put them in boxes but it doesn't work. I may have to resort to that again.. the place I shot these pics is where my repair stand is and my tools... and Cable TV..

This is my play room. Obviously a very untidy one.

It's only after the builds do I clean this place up neat and tidy... or when the next project arises...

Gotta clean up and get organized!

Thanks for posting this. I have showed it to my wife and she agrees that I'm not the only one with this disease buts wants to know why your stuff is in one room whereas mine is in several. I explained to her my stuff is organized compared to just strewn about.

I just wish this thing fit them all. There are two more stuffed in the kitchen of my apartment.

P.S. I'd be happy to share build sheet and tips for anyone wanting to build one. Came out to about $100.

now i have several rooms that have been subjected to the same level
of organization...when we remodeled our kitchen the old cupboards came
down...if you open them...they look much like what you see in your own
garage...so much so
that when my bikeshop owner/friend came over for a new year's party
several years ago, he dubbed the place expedition company north!
there is a place in our utility room right off the garage
that is a mud/winter/riding gear staging area.
the helmet cupboard was built for me when the espresso bar
went into the kitchen
with my own sink, etc.
finally, the garage holds a few more bikes.
i don't work out there much in winter
although it used to be heated, it holds the cars, the tandem
a few serottas and bike racks, etc.
all kayaks, paddles and jackets moved to our cabin's garage
in order to allow the cars to fit more easily in the garage at home.
my wife uses the term 'metastasis' to describe my antics
but she seems pretty happy with me finding my place...

I was just throwing some friendly sarcasm your way.

It seems a bunch of us are all cut from the same cloth - a collector never stops collecting!

After reading "The Good Life" by Helen and Scott Nearing this past year for the second time in my adult life along with the effect of the new "minimalist" movement I started trimming down the amount of crap i kept lying around and adopted some new work habits. You may find some of this useful:

1) Let Go!
If you haven't used it in a year, you probably won't. "But it's worth X amount, I can't get rid of it" you say. Well, I've found that with ebay and online classifieds I've sold my "collectables" for close to if not fair market value. If I find I do ever need it again, i can just re purchase down the road. With all of the crap I sold this past year I have a hefty fund in reserve- chances are I won't buy it all back

2) A place for everything, and everything in its place.
With what you've got left over, if it's still a substantial amount, find a place for everything. For storage in a private area, I'm a big fan of the clear plastic storage boxes. If you have 5 saddles, buy a container big enough for 8 saddles and label it appropriately (but you may just want to get rid of 3 saddles instead). The last thing you're gonna wanna do is play Tetris every time you need to grab something or put something away, so give yourself extra room. Combine where you can and label, label, label!

3) Keep your area tidy.
After working on a project or grabbing a part, etc put away your stuff. If you grab one of those saddles, put the lid on the box and the box back on the shelf. If you're using tools, clean them and put them away in one place when you're done. In the past, i've spent more time looking for a tool (under magazines, carried into a different room, etc) than doing the project. Now all of bike tools are in one box and get put away at the end of the job.

4) One step at a time to form good habits
Don't try and tackle everything at once. In my case i picked two or three items at a time to unload / sell. Helps from the process being overwhelming. After I got most of the extras out, I then figured out how much space / storage I needed. (I still have some things to get rid of). After that, it was on to the good habits part - knowing where everything is and keeping everything clean and tidy. Having less to keep track of and convenient, easy to use organized storage makes it much easier.

I'd shoot you over a pic, but there's not much to see. We're down to four bikes in the apartment (two on a wall rack), one large plastic bin of parts in a closet (and some loose stuff slated for the classifieds) plus a fluid trainer and its accessories. I use the trainer and riser block as a workstand when necessary.

Forming new habits and resisting temptation a bit has helped me keep this going as opposed to a "one-shot-cleanup-four-months-to-a-new-mess" situation.

Again, this has been my experience and just sharing what I've done. I wish you luck with your project.

Spiderman: At least you gots lotsa space... everywhere.. I am only allowed this room. My other bikes are in another storage area... all 30 of em... :crap:

BobbyJones: You are ABSOLUTELY AND POSITIVELY CORRECT. I have many vintage components, framesets, etc.. that have been relegated to their respective 'areas' but I need to define them better. Most of the 'stuff' that I do not use, I will need to store away and record it so I may find it at a later stage in time. Thanks for sharing.

DEJA VU!!!!

SNAP out of it!

Just watch the greasy rag build up (seal top metal trash can) and revel in knowing all your riding friends are jealous. YES they are! (here come the denials)

If you know where everything is, this in NOT a problem. Walked right to 4 - 1979 Campy brake blocks this summer to prove my point. My better half and I argu... have conversations about what the garage looks like all the time. She doesn't know what to say when I comeback at her with "You'll just park the car in there!". I win!!

Bikes in multiple rooms? Not a problem.
Not having that new cable/chain/bar tape etc.. when building next new one? Problem.

If you have bikes you don't ride...not a problem, ya just got too many bikes.

A few pics of my "space". For years it was the corner of the garage...a very small, messy corner which meant I had bikes and parts all over not only the garage floor but the inside of the house as well. Then a few years ago we moved and my wife made me promise I'd build a man-cave/bike room. I did...and it's to small and my wife ask numerous times while the build was in process, "are you sure it will be big enough" and I said, "oh honey, I don't have that many bikes and or parts/stuff, it'll be plenty big". As usual I should of listened to her!!! So the winter project is busting out a wall and expanding. Thank goodness my wife has always been more than supportive even when things were a total mess in the garage.

It's not always this clean but I certainly try hard to keep things somewhat organized.

Hey guys, I apologize for my post. It wasn't my intention to "hijack" the thread anymore then it would be J.Brunks intention when he posts one of his amazing builds or anyone posts something a bit "out of the ordinary".

I happen to be the President/Director of Portland Velo Cycling Club. We have about 500 members of which I know probably 450 of them by name. I ride and hang out with them 2 or 3 days per week. I can count the number of club members on one hand who have ever been in my shop. I don't talk about it, brag about it or anything else. Probably 450 of them don't even know I have the shop. If I can help a member or anyone else with something I have in the shop or can do in the shop I'm happy to.

My point is this, I love to see anything and everything cycling on this forum. I love the posts of cool bikes, expensive bikes, garage project bikes, any bikes. I love seeing pics of where guys work on their machines, big, little, dirty, clean, cramped, roomy it doesn't matter to me and shouldn't to you. It is what it is and whoever it belong's to probably loves it and it serves their purpose just fine.

I started riding and did my first century, the Hancock Hundred, in 1972. I love cycling, it's always been a huge part of my life. From the time I picked up a tiny brown "Mafac" tool kit way back when, I always wanted a place I could escape to and work on my bikes. Like I said, until a few years ago that place was a corner of the garage. Thanks to the incredible support of my wife and at her suggestion I now have a stable for my horses.

Honestly I'm prouder and more boastful about my wife and how she supports my cycling passion then I am of either my bikes or my shop. A shop and bikes are just "stuff". It can all be gone in a flash and can be replaced. My stuff is always evolving, being traded, sold, new stuff bought, stuff given away etc. My wife and her love and support can never be replaced.

When I'm in the shop with my dog Pepper at my feet and grease under my nails I'm in my own little bike nirvana.

Posts your shops, your rooms, your corners, your closets etc guys and again, I wasn't trying to rain on anyone's parade with my post.

Have a good day everyone.

KRhea

PS The room is 12.5'x15.5' and a tad over 9' high

krhea,

No one thinks that you are boasting, in fact I can pretty much assure you that everyone loved checking out your bike space.

That's cool that you are pres of a bike club of that size, it often takes a lot of work to run those things and although people my not say it I'm sure that they appreciate your efforts.

Love the response here and KRhea, you ARE da MAN!

Somehow, I knew there are people like me in this world... and I want to know where I stand in terms of my messiness... pretty down low compared to KRhea's shop.

I need to think on how I want my bike cave to look.. maybe add some lava lamps strategically to add mood? :p

Please keep them pictures and stories coming!

For those peeps who thank me profusely for showing my uber messy place so you can feel better about yourself, I aim to please. I hope it helps with your everlasting battle to buy more bike stuff and justify them with your better half!

It's no big deal to me. It is afterall, my mess in my kingdom. No one cleans up after me. I do that myself - whenever I want to. But i should do that everytime. ;)

Looking backwards is a bit of disaster as things piled up while I had the new hip put in. The white bags in the lower-front are the wrapping from the new Zonda wheelset. Other bags are recycling to be dropped off at the Goodwill store. Not that am fully ambulatory am starting to get caught-up on so many things, getting things well organized being chief amongst them.

Need ideas and suggestions from my fellow forumites, please. The large, plastic coated hooks sold by HD/Lowes/Hdwr stores work great for hanging multiple tires/tubes and wheelsets, amongst other items. Screw them into the wall or ceiling studes. Performance bike sells a 'wall-hook' that allows you to mount you bikes on the wall (off the floor) using the front wheel. One on every stud spaces your bikes on 16" centers, which is about perfect. Alternate the height by about 12" and you will get good bar clearance.

Guess which tires have reflective sideswalls. :)

I am 6'6" so yes I ride jumbo sized bikes. A number of bikes in the pictures I don't own anymore because they were replaced with something that fit me better.

Only if you consider 7-8 years riding a long time. I rode in college for transportation and some fun rides, but stopped for a number of years. I got back into mountain biking 7-8 years ago and have added a lot of stuff since. The shop started out simple enough as wanting to learn to do repairs to work on my bikes instead of paying someone else to do it. That led to buying some tools and then some more tools and some more, and then figuring out to use my new skill to support my own bike habit by flipping older vintage steel road/mtn bikes on the side. That also led to a mechanics job at a local LBS and I was there 2.5 years until the shop closed. Every bike and tool I own was bought by the profits of flipping.

@ bigmatt

Very nice cave.

I believe you have the most organized parts bins I've ever seen!

Dayum, you're quite the wheel whore, aren't you? ;)

Thanks, the organization has been a very long process and will never be finished. I have a shop remodel in mind to make better use of the repair/work area, more bench/counter space, and better organization of the tools as well.

A lot of the wheels come from bikes I parted out for parts donors to use when flipping road bikes. I did a major cleaning house a few weeks ago and went through some of my wheels. Some where in such bad shape and unusable so I cut out the hubs for spares just in case and recycle the steel/aluminum rims. I cut up 20+ wheels to reduce the wheel clutter, and I am still not finished yet. With that said the majority of wheels in front of the GT banner are spare wheels(ets) of mine, and yes that is too many since most are actually track wheelsets.

It does sway a bit and that was my initial concern as well. While it does have a bit of sway, it is sturdier than it appears. I'm not having any issues using it so far and don't get a lot of sway when I remove or add a bike.
