I am all for the use of a bike as a creative rolling canvas. That being said, the edge between over done and just right is razor thin. The Colnago Futura (http://italiancyclingjournal.blogspot.com/2009/03/art-bikes-colnago-futura-and-colnago.html) bike came to mind reading your thread. Whats wrong with innovation coming within and artistic awesomeness showing it off?

This is also one of the reasons Serotta is so cool. A ton of custom "standard" paint options and the ability to create anything you ask them to. Some people get really creative and others go for a more traditional look. No two bike should be the same IMO.

my current rides are pretty tame. got a peg on order and will let my artistic (haha) side show a bit on it!

I think a garish scheme would certainly be enough to keep me from an entire brand.

For example, I obviously love Slawta's craftsmanship, and while I've seen some delightfully restrained examples, the mostly crazy paint would probably keep LS stuff away from the top of my list.

Some of the Peg stuff has the same effect on me; I'd prob look elsewhere first despite knowing how excellent the bikes are.

Color is hugely important - to me at least. I wouldn't want a Sachs cross bike in anything other than red/white*. I wouldn't want an older Pista Concept in anything but Celeste.

But I don't want to seem stodgy - I LOVED the Look Mondrian stuff at Interbike this year and I'd probably swap an organ for that Keith Haring Cinelli Laser.

*OK, it's a Sachs cross bike - I'd take it in clashing shades of magenta.

I painted my old IRO and printed some stickers (with pegoretti inspiration)...

My general felling is that a bike frame just does not present a very good canvas for the extreme paint jobs. The tubes are too small and too far apart.

Often Slawta's and Dario's stuff just seem like a missed attempt. You kind find great examples of simply beauty from both or them.

However, if it floats your boat I certainly would not judge.

Well when art is concerned ... beauty is in the eye of the beholder Pegoretti has certainly made a living of using the bike as his canvas and done very well.

I bought my Duende for the way it fits and handles.. The uniqueness is just a bonus..

It is all about the ride (tubes & geometry). And if the ride rules, then paint it however you like.

Personally, I love riding and seeing unique paint-jobs on my rides.

The more art, the better.

Dario builds a wonderful bike yes the art work he paints on the tubes is just icing on the cake

I consider him artistic more than an artist in the traditional sense of the word. Although that doesn't make much sense when talking "Art", since anything can be considered art. All I know is I love the frame.

Steel frames in themselves are works of art, paint helps to define them.
Peg paint schemes work because they define the builder as do Sachs.
What's not to like in either a Colnago Master X-Light Mapei or
Joe Bell Classic Paint on this Rivendell? Both help express the builders craftsmanship.

or

BTW I like what nathbdp did with his IRO Peg inspired paint.

In this as in much else, it's being true to yourself that counts. If you are trying to be hip or thinking the artist is trying to be hip, the bike won't work emotionally. If the bike has a paint scheme you like to step back and admire, because you "get" what the artist was delivering or the bike reflects your idea and the artist got that just right, nothing else matters.

Fine art on my bike? Absolutely. I had a lesser Frans Hals that just wasn't working in the living room anymore so I used it to recover an old Aliante saddle that still had some life in it.

Kidding.

Paint your frame however you like, it will be 'you'. If you think you may sell the bike in the future, remember that what you think looks good, to a potential buyer it may look like.....needs a paint job.
I go for unpainted when I have the option.

Resale red!! Works for Ferrari should work for bikes too :D .

If you're thinking resale, you bought the wrong frame.

Stella please don't cop a 'tude'. What are you trying to imply? You have never got bored with your old ride? Never wanted to upgrade? I have NEVER bought a bike thinking of selling it in the future, but like anything new after awhile the luster fades and you may be tempted to look elsewhere.

My Merlin is as good as when I got her (good ti lasts forever) but, after 5 years my eye started to wander, now I have a new Ottrot in the garage waiting to be built up and ridden this spring. Having too many bikes as it is and the garage starting to overflow with them, the thought of moving some of them out IS crossing my mind. Since I don't ride trash the thought of giving them away is a little selfish on my part, so selling is the other option.
I know for a fact what color a bike is can be the difference between a sale and "no thanks".

The question here was about wild or exotic paint jobs. Ferrari red is a good color, not wild or particularly exotic, more in the safe zone for paint. But I have never seen an aftermarket paint job that could compare with what the builder would put on. Custom means "for you" and that is what I said. I wasn't downing anybodies bike, to each his own. I just have seen too many people trying to sell whatever with custom paint schemes that they put on, and think that they are going to get more for it because of the custom paint.
The opposite is usually the case.

A true work of art on a bike like the rivendale should be put on a wall. It is just too pretty to ride and scuff up.

I'm really late to the party on these Colnago futuras, but just read that there was a road version prototype.

https://bikerumor.com/2013/09/10/the-110000-futura-2000-colnago-master-pista-prototype-own-it-today/

I like the paint, but would swap the wheels and some other bits (as well as the price tag) and ride the heck out of it before hanging it on a wall.

Subjective to the nth degree.

I have a nude Look 585 stealthed out to a Mongrel Lynskey Pro CX with overly colorful vinyl cleared over for a gravel steed and orange tires.

Life is a canvas, maybe your bikes too! ;)

To each their own et al.

Its hard to generalize but sometimes stuff just falls into place even tho it should not in theory.

i like this for example even tho i perhaps would not pay big money for something similar.

Part of me wanted something wild when I went Surprise Me with my SV, but another part is happy that I got something is relatively staid and timeless.

I would love a landshark, or a peg ciavete or sending a bike to velocolour with a few ideas, colours and budget and say go at it. If the person doing the wild paint knows what they are doing and knows when too much is too much, then I'm all for it.

I'm all about some custom paint. This one-of-a-kind is a custom (under the clear) abstract work by a local artist... My 4yo daughter. :D
