Can anyone here recommend a shop on or near Whidbey Island that rents road bikes? I will probably be visiting family there for a week or so this summer and would prefer not to deal with the combination of air travel and a road bike. I would welcome any ride suggestions as well.

Thanks.

At the bottom of the page are several suggested route maps for Whidbey Island:

If you have the time, I'd also recommended going to Anacortes, taking the ferry over the Orcas Island, and riding to the top of Mt. Constitution (if you want a climb). Another ride would be to start somewhere in the Skagit Valley (around Burlington) and ride north along the Chuckanut Drive up to Bellingham.

I don't know the bike shops on Whidbey.

If you're going to be flying into Seattle, you could pick up a bike in town and take it out to Whidbey with you. A couple places to try are:

Montlake Cycle.

Veloce Velo (on Mercer Island). They used to rent high-end road bikes in their old location but don't know if they still do.

You could ship the bike ahead via UPS or FedEx.

This isn't without some hassle and risk. A few years back I had the big chainring on my DeRosa bent when they dropped the Trico case. However, if you are going to be there that long it might be worth it to have your bike, and the shipping cost might actually be less than a multi-day rental. (Assuming you can get your hands on a good container.)
